What is the best way to clean and blow out the ATF out of the cooler without causing it to corrode? I really want to use this for a secondary oil cooler. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Thanks
I would just drain it. A tablespoon of ATF in the engine oil isn't going to hurt anything. Then after it's running and the oil has circulated I *might* do an early oil change.

I was actually wondering about this in reverse lol. I am making a new oil cooler system and I want to use the dual stocks as the Manual Trans coolers. I was kinda thinking like jeff that i should just buy new coolers and use the old placement to be safe

so does anyone know for sure if the coolers are different in operation? I have done a 5spd swap years ago and still have the AT cooler disconnected just taking up space. I would love to utilize it if possible.
IIRC the ATF runs at a lower pressure that the oil cooler, and that would be your main concers, one of my friends here in town took his honda to midas for an oil change and they filled it with ATf, it ran fine he didnt even know till he took it in to get it worked on a few weeks later and the guy told him, but that is a honda though

Thanks for the responses guys! I think I will just blow it out and do an early oil change. I have a short drive every day so I will be able to monitor this carefully.
rotordream - i am doing a AT-MT swap on my car.

Am I going to have to put more oil when I put in when i run dual oil coolers? How many quarts do R1's and 2's require??
Will it also be a problem if I do not utilize the hard lines going to the secondary cooler? I'm planning on running soft lines connected to brackets.

why go through the man swap when you can run the pfc with the banzai harness?. I would spend the money on a level-10 auto trans upgrade and retain the stock operations of the car. I've installed 4.3 gears and now the pfc with the banzai racing harness. going in for a tune next and then a trans upgrade to finish things off. after these upgrades I don't think the man trans cars will have anything over me with the same mod's. overall I think my car will be quicker as I will not loose boost during shifting. (Not trying to start a debate over this, just my thoughts). the auto is not as bad as people think and you can mod the auto's the same as the man trans cars.

I have not felt a 4.3 rear end on an auto trans, and im sure it would accelerate quicker, but a couple years ago when my brother owns his FD, we had the same mods, but it was night and day.

Here is some information from experience.....Running the auto trans oil cooler as a 2nd engine oil cooler was discussed long ago on the old digest. I was there. The consensus then was it was fine. I have done THREE auto conversions to manual on my cars. In all three cases I removed the auto trans cooler, cleaned it, straightened fins, painted and re-installed as a 2nd engine oil cooler. In the 8 or 9 years of running these, I have had NO issues. I made my own adaplters to -10AN ss line using the stock auto trans nipples. The reason you must use those fittings is they are deep enough threads to seal. Someone suggested an Earls fitting. I bought one and it did NOT seat deep enough.
Here is my oil flow - Out of the Pump it goes to the new oil cooler ( old trans cooler ), exiting that and over to the driver side oil cooler, out of that and back to the oil filter neck area. '
I've included one of my custom fittings picture. You need these to make it happen.
