Converting from auto climate-control

When I purchased the car over a year ago, neither of the climate control, AC, blower etc worked at all. As I attempted to fix it, I decided to remove the auto climate control functions, and just use regular heating/ac.

I discovered that the AC pipework was actually disconnected at the condenser, so figured that was a problem for another day - for now I'd be happy with just being able to de-mist my windows, and have a bit of heat from the blower!

So I replaced the dashboard loom, and hvac fascia panel. The result was that the blower would only switch on when the speed setting was set to 4 AND only if the direction was set to come out of the front vents.

I read that it is likely the blower motor resistor that also needs replacing, so I purchased a resistor from a non-climate control car. However, this resistor has different terminals - and does not fit on the current wiring loom.

Therefore, to get over this year long headache, I'd like to know the following;

1. Assuming the resistor is controlling the speed - why is it only the front facing vents it works on, even on setting 4? What else could be causing this and how can this be overcome?
2. Do I need another small loom for the non climate control resistor type? Is there a part number for this? (I assume this will patch in to the dashboard loom?)

It's a 1992 JDM model.

Any help, advice, guidance would be immensely appreciated!

Can't help with the problem, but for this -

you're probably 20 years too late to buy anything like that new.

About the only way to get anything other than the emissions harness is second-hand and a climate control car will be even more difficult, particularly these days. Did actually have a climate control half cut here in the early 2000s, but all the wiring looms were tossed a few years ago.

I fully expect to have to buy used parts, its more so I know what I'm supposed to be buying. I'm looking to strip the auto climate stuff out completely, so just wanting to know what else needs to be changed besides what I've done so far (dash loom, fascia), and what loom is needed to swap out the auto climate resistor for a non-auto resistor.

I believe you are correct when you say you need the blower motor resistor. The auto head units may have those as part of the unit or have a different resistor altogether. The resistor is just that, should have 3 to 4 different circuits inside. Three have different resistors inside to step down the voltage sent to the blower motor. On high speed you send direct 12 volts to the motor which bypasses the resistor or in some cases is inside the resistor but just a switch with no resistance like the other three legs. You would have to pull up a wiring diagram to confirm.
