compression test, help pls !

Hi guys, im about to purchase a fd3s and was advised to get a compression test done before i purchase it.
I was wondering what a compression test actually does and what should it be reading ? any help would be great

If they're using a gauge type (non-mazda) compression tester, it should read around 85 and above. Most rebuild will read 110. Mine read 100 in the front and 95 in the rear at it's point in lifetime right now. I have 72,xxx miles If that helps. If it's a mazda tester you'd want 8 and above. Anything in the 7's might need a tune up, but I wouldn't buy a car with 6's. When I first got my car I had m car tested with a mazda tester, and it read 8.6 in front and 8.5 in the rear. Just my 2 cents
