Exclamation Cold Idle Problem - Car Sometimes Stalls

Hello,

I'm having a problem of the car stalling under cold operation. Car does not stall after warmed up. This has become more noticeable after a Throttle Body Coolant Bypass. I've used safety wire to hold back the fast idle cam bracket. I don't have it fully open, because it won't allow the tb butterflys to fully open.

http://www.rx7.org/Robinette/throttle_body_coolant.htm

I've noticed this problem even before I did this mod, but it was intermittent. Now I have to practically sit there on the gas at idle speed to prevent from stalling until the car warms.

Help is most appreciated!

The car will not idle well when cold if you just remove the tb coolant. You can make it better with tuning. I haven honestly never seen any power benefit to removing the tb coolant.

Interesting.

Regarding the intermittent stalling when I did have the coolant, could it also be caused from poor tuning? I know it was tuned prior to my care at Church Automotive. I realize you're not from CA, but they are a reliable tuner. Their familiarity with rotaries I cannot contest, but I know them well from my previous vehicle.

A poorly mapped temperature correction often is the cause for a bad idle when cold.

As RES said, Doing that mod will make you have a poor cold idle always - unless you run a higher idle.

Besides tuning, research and check your throttle body mechanical settings and TPS sensor readings.

Church seems to do a lot of Honda stuff. Only some of that knowledge is applicable to rotaries. Might want to start a new thread if you can get your dyno and A/F ratios to get some opinions from those in the know.

This car makes me frustrated. The upper rad hose just sprung a leak. I wasn't able to catch it in time before I noticed the temp gauge in the upper red. I worry of internal damage... The coolant level sensor was bypassed by the previous owner and I just put an order through Ray last week for that part. What a stroke of bad luck. Damn I hope the engine isn't toast. Can't tell too much, but it sounded fine when I fired it up after topping off coolant.

I fully agree with the above statements. I have an rsx and had extensive tuning through Church. Being that they work mainly with Hondas and piston engines in general, made me hesitate on their abilities on this unique beast. What a pia though, I can understand the, "love/hate relationship."

I'll look into some southern CA tuners. Any advise and experience is appreciated though.
