6 puck Clutch slipping

My car has a Spec 6 puck clutch in it. It has about 500 miles on it. When I run 14 psi it feels like it is slipping. I don't hear the tires slipping so it can't be the tires. I'm guessing the clutch needs adjustment. Has anyone had this problem with this clutch? Look at my sig for mods.

Did you make sure to break in the clutch properly before turning up the boost and beating on it?

I have never on my life broken in a cooper ceramic clutch and never had this problem. This is my 4th car that I own with the same brand and type of clutch including my previous FD.

dude, a 6 puck, you should be able to get in it, and pound the **** out of it after about 2 miles. i have ACT Dtage 5 Extreme street, (straight disk) and i beat the **** out of it from day one, its fine!! start checking free play measurements, and throw length, and make sure its engaged all the way...

Well I was under the impression that regaurdless of if it was a 6-puck or solid that theres a seating process(break in). Since its still a clutch and has irregularities in the surface that it needs to be properly seated just like any solid disk and brake pads in order to get the full contact patch. And if not seated it would only be clamping with maybe half as much of the surface and could cause excess heat which could lead to quicker deteriation, cracking and disfiguration of the clutch disk and even spring because of the excess friction put onto the smaller contact area And if it was something else such as free play wouldnt you have noticed sooner...? But then again i could be wrong.

well when I replaced the clutch I also replced the tranny. My old clutch was gone. So I don't remember how the clutch felt before I changed it. I haven't got the chance to check it since the car is in storage for the next 2 weeks while I got out to Cali for vacation. But I think I don't have any free play what so ever.

My tires lose traction without making noise all the time. I bet your tires are slipping. Since the speedo is on the tranny output shaft, perhaps you could figure out if it is clutch or tires by watching the speedo.

well no free play = some amount of clutch engagement when you have your foot off the pedal which may be enough to cause some slipping.

I don't think I have the room.

Max, When this happens the car stays in line, meaning is not fish tailing or anything. Could it be the tires still? I got Pirrelli's P7000 Super Sport all season tires (came with the car) in pretty good conditions.

There could be oil or other fluid on the clutch face.

BTW, those tires suck. All-season tires have no place on an FD.

You should be able to feel if the tires are spinning. I doubt that is your problem. Try hard acceleration from 60-90 in third gear, to check for slipping. Not likely that you will spin your tires at those speeds.

Adam yeah at those speed I have no problem it just either out of 1st or a roll out of 2nd going WOT. But I still have to test it at 14 psi from 3rd at 60 mph. Just out of the a traffic light it will either spin or slip all 1st, 2nd and half of 3rd and that's at 12psi. I only ran the car at 14 psi once and it was by accident actually. I was setting my hi boost setting on the EBC and it gave me 14 psi at the lowest setting. My ECU is set for it but I don't like pushing the car like that. I keep it at 10 low and 12 hi.

Rynberg yes I know those tires suck mayor *** I kept them because I was planning on getting new rims and tires but i'm going to change all my suspension bushing first. I will take a look at it but I don't think there was any oily stuff in there. when I did the clutch and tranny swap it was bone dry in there and I cleaned everything including the pressure plate and flywheel sufaces with brake cleaner.

If it doesn't slip in 3rd gear, the clutch is probably ok. I have some nice used tires for sale if you want something inexpensive to fit a stock rim.

The tires can slip without it being all that obvious. Mine slip and the main indication is that the revs shoot up. The car is so loud you don't hear any tire noise, and when going straight you might not get much side motion.

A full boost run in third gear on a good surface, with warm tires on a warm surface, going perfectly straight (so the tires probably won't slip) might help you diagnose the problem. Your torque peak is probably around 5500, so the highest gear you can go full boost at that RPM will be the most likely to make the clutch slip, and being in high gear probably means the tires won't slip.

Make sure you have a bit of free play in the pedal. If not then the clutch is not fully engaged.
