Clutch release cylinder installed-do I need an adjustment?

I believe I have cylinder aligned and installed properly. I bled the line (with cylinder not installed). When I press the clutch pedal, I don't feel any resistance. I have to pull it back up manually. Any advice?

Thanks - Tom

I have two suggestions:

1. Some or maybe all of the release cylinders have a small steel ball that is supposed to go in the bleeder screw hole before you screw in the bleeder screw. Without it, the clutch will be limp like you are describing. I am not sure if they all have this, though. The release cylinder that was on my car from the factory had one of these *****, but I think the reman replacement that I got (from Mazda) may not have had one. My reman replacement also had a bleeder screw with different threads than the original. The original threads were 7x1.0, I think, and the replacement had what looked to be a larger diameter bleeder screw. The bleeder screw difference may help you determine if yours should have a ball or not.

2. I had trouble bleeding the release cylinder. I tried for a while to bleed it myself with no luck. I then left the bleeder open for a while and gravity seemed to fill the release cylinder. When I did mine I had also replaced the flex hose to the cylinder, so it might not be so bad if you just do the cylinder. A pressure bleeder (http://motiveproducts.com) might make the job of bleeding the release cylinder a whole lot easier.

I believe the bleeding was successful. I did see the little ball (which I put back in). I had a friend pump the clutch, saw fluid come out, tightened the bleeder cap (stopped flow), and checked the reservoir (had plenty of fluid in the clutch chamber. Maybe I didn't bleed long enough?

Thanks - Tom
