How did you not find anything in your searches? Of course people have different opinions.....

The fact is that the ACT S/S clutch is the most commonly used aftermarket clutch here and almost no one has a problem with it. Stick with what works.

I read somewhere that the stock clutch was upgraded for the later years and can hold a good amount of power? any truth to this? Mine started slipping

The ACT S/S clutch seems to be the favorite around here so that's what I bought.

ACT HD S/S as was previously mentioned. It's about $500. Make sure it's a 3rd gen specific kit, w/ all the bearings. When you replace the clutch, replace ALL the bearings (including throwout and pilot, even if they look good). Replace o-rings and seals as necessary.

W/ upgraded clutches, make sure you get an upgraded clutch fork from Ray Crowe @ Malloy Mazda. The older (not upgraded) clutch fork is notorious for breaking from using an upgraded heavy duty clutch. The new upgraded fork is only $65 from Ray. So that's nothing, compared to pulling out the tranny again a few months later when the fork breaks...

Also, while you have the tranny out, check all the sensors on the tranny. It's a good time to give them attention as necessary. It's also a great time to rebuild your 5th gear synchro, and change the tranny fluid.

In addition, this is a great time to consider a lightened flywheel, if you're serious about making 400hp. Not the most streetable mod IMO (esp. if you have a lot of hills and stop & go traffic), but it sure helps revs fly up and braking. If you're interested, there are combo kits (clutch + lightened flywheel) or you can pick up a lightened flywheel on the forum for cheap(er)

~Ramy

PS...Did I mention that modifying this car is EXTREMELY expensive? And doing all of this at once is prob the cheapest it gets, since each time you do it means more labor = more $$... (unless you do the work yourself, and don't mind spending 3+ hours pulling the tranny and getting to the clutch.

BTW, www.turboimport.com has the ACT S/S clutch for $459 if you are looking to save a little money.

Thanks guys for all the input , the act was what i was looking at so you all just made up my mind. I have owned the car a couple of years so i know how much it is to upgrade, and i do do all the work myself, i dont trust any of the dealers or shops around here to do any work on it. I will replace the fork also $70 is nothing, i just didnt want to spend a $1000 on some clutch that i did not need for my use.
