Had a garage look at the clutch and they recon it's the thrust bearing. Spoke to them a couple of times and one guy said it had "blown up" and the 2nd said it looks like it the metal ring that's popped off. I know that when it was fitted it came with a new bearing so i'm doubting it had gone completely and hoping that the ring has popped off.
Is there anyway to ensure, that if it is the ring, it does not pop off again?

I hope it just needs bleeding, cause its always a headache to have to pull the tranny... unless you have a warranty
This might be a place to look if he indeed had pedal pressure (I.E.) it didn't stay collapsed on the floor. Since he doesn't have any the slave/master cylinder is a typical failure after a new clutch installation of older cars. The seals tend to fail after bleeding the system. You may have some luck just replacing the slave but they seem to fail together and if you don't do the master at the same time you usually have to do it shortly after the slave.

Not the first time someone has installed the throw out bearing incorrectly or damaged the locking collar during a clutch job. The symptoms would be the same as no pedal pressure. The bearing is most likely ok, just the locking ring on the pressure plate may be damaged. You might be able to just reinsert the throw out bearing into the pressure plate and make sure it locks in place this time......may not require major repair at all.

Spoke to the garage eventually and it's the locking collar for the release bearing. Seems it had either broken or just popped off. Now they are expecting me to foot the bill $600 approx, i'm not happy as I think they screwed up fitting it and it's just popped off

I can tell you that the wedge collar just doesn't "pop off". If they did the work which fitted your transmission to your engine, then they either:

1. Damaged the wedge collar either separating the transmission from the engine or during the install.
2. Didn't get the wedge collar situated properly during the mating of the transmission and the engine.

Do the collars fail often? Cannot see how they would especially as it was a brand new thrust bearing and collar etc

Once again, they don't fail. They get damaged or installed improperly.

It's still the same. Unless the collar/ring is damaged during removal or installation, it doesn't snap, fail or break. However, they are fairly easy to damage.
