Question Clutch for 400hp?

Hi I am going for 400hp on my fd rx7 and my question is what is a good clutch for stop and go traffic. Also the car will be a street car but I do want to drag it once or twice a year so any info or experience would be very helpful, also my budget is around $500.
Thanks

Might have to save a bit more. Probably will be one of the ACT sprung clutches at that price range.

I have a HD sprung 6 puck clutch that is supposed to be good for 600 HP

Low mileage (don't know exact miles but the clutch and PP look good)

The ACT street kit fits your requirements well, but will cost you more than $500.

ACT street/strip is what I had on all my FDs (300whp - 500whp). Its a great clutch and very driveable.

I will just add 2 cents.

My car dynos right around ~400 rwhp. I have the ACT Street/Strip pressure plate + full face sprung center street strip disk.

It is very driveable on the street with some increase in pedal pressure. Smooth engagement.

The only thing I don't like is that after a few years, it has started to slip even on roll-on full-throttle in COLD weather only when the car is really making tons of power. In the summer when the weather is hotter and the air is less dense, it is still working fine. I have another new disk ready to go in soon.

Overall very happy with this clutch/pp combo. I have driven some 6 pucks and those were horrible for the street of course.

Im running an ACT 6 puck sprung, swiss cheese flywheel and their 2nd heaviest pressure plate, I find it plenty drivable, but then i'm coming from a 4 puck solid which was on the border line of being a pig for DDing.

Hi guys thanks for all the info, I am looking into the act street/strip clutch as it seems a lot of people like the clutch, I also plan on making a little more power in the future so I think the act street/strip clutch might be a good fit for my application.
Thanks

i went from act street/strip to act 6puck unspung with the same pp. Engagement to me is almost identical to the sprung clutch with just a little more bite, the only thing i hate is sometimes when engaging it will sqweek or something which is annoying.

I would personally go with a ACT ZX6-HDG6 kit. Get a lightweight aftermarket steel flywheel and you'll have the best of all worlds.

It supports room for power growth, reduces chatter being sprung, increased cooling due to the pucks, and the lighter flywheel allows for faster revs without making you stall out with an aluminum flywheel.

A stronger pressure plate and stock oem disc is the most street friendly/cost efficient combination for your power goals. The only thing you will notice is increased pedal effort from the stronger plate. Engagement will be stock like. I originally had a sprung 6 puck disc that came with my clutch but it was too grabby. I removed the 6 puck disc and swapped in an oem stock disc (as recommended by a fellow 20b turbo owner) and found that to be the perfect street combination. This combination held 550rwhp on that 20b so you will be fine at 400.

What pressure plate would you recommend with a stock disk.
Thanks

Yes I know all too well what you mean, I live in NYC and traffic is brutal and all my car does is screech and squeal trying to find an easy engagement, I'd go street disk
But I am making too much power, my next move will be a twin disk but I am too cheap!

I have the ACT PP with OEM disc, drives like stock, takes about 5 miles to get used to vs stock.

I can only recommend what I'm running. That's an Xtd stage 3 pressure plate.

Richard,

for YOUR objectives i like t-von's setup.

IF your disc and flywheel are in good shape you could just buy an ACT pressure plate.

ACT MZ028X around $440 shipped.

maybe the HD pressure plate might work in your app. it has a touch less spring pressure MZ028. around $420.

i very much like the Exedy Stage 2 for a touch less hp. the unit you linked is not what you want as it is the thin disk. the proper Exedy item is 10953 (pressure plate and disc for approx $550). really well engineered but max rw torque is 320 ft pounds.
