Clock spring replacement help

Hi guys!

This question is about my 94 FD touring model. I'm actually trying to put the stock steering wheel back on. The previous owner had a quick release nrg hub on there but kind of hacked up the wiring to get rid of the airbag light and make the horn work.

I noticed the clock spring is gone. Second thing I noticed is some wires have been cut and spliced. Can anyone tell me from the attached pic if the previous owner removed a pin which connects to the clock spring to attach an airbag resistor? It also looks like they spliced into the other pin to make the horn work. These two pins would then connect to the clock spring I believe.

Basically I think I need to restore these two pins which would then connect to the clock spring, which I would have to buy because it's missing in the car, and then connect the stock steering wheel with air bag in order to go back to stock. Can anyone confirm please?

Thanks,
Mike

I can't really tell from the picture and I haven't been into the steering column in a while. I would probably find someone that can sell you all the crap that bolts onto the end of the steering column - turn signals, ignition switch, clock spring, everything. That way you can go through and make sure you're all good.

you know Dave I was actually thinking that. That way I would have all the missing components. The only thing is that whole assembly is a little expensive so I was wondering if maybe someone knows if there are just some clips I would be able to purchase. Thanks for the input!

I would think the parts you would need would be somewhat reasonably priced. They don't go bad that often. I would maybe PM some of the guys on the forum (Fritz, Tom) who part out a lot of cars and see what they have and how much it would run.

Also, RHD and LHD are going to be different most likely.

I'm not sure what's up with the plastic cover around the wheel there, it looks really odd and has wires going to it for some reason.

I know this is a few month old but thought I’d ask if you got it figured out. I’m in a similar situation with my FD where it had an aftermarket steering wheel, no clock spring and I happen to have a rats nest of wires to a turbo timer I’d like to rip out too. Of course, the horn doesn’t work either. Anyway, I’m going to a Nandi I believe Miata wheel and curious if you found the clock spring. That has been a challenge for me and wonder if a Miata clock spring has correct plugs and works as those go for way less and easy to find but I eventually want functional horn, airbag, and need to figure out cruise controls (I read the protege cruise controls button can be fabbed to work but not the highest priority now). Oh I do believe my signal and wiper switches are all good to go and I did see the 3 female plugs deeper down for what I believe is the clock spring connections.

You should just be able to track down a used clock spring to start with and move forward.

In addition to RHD vs. LHD the clock spring assembly is different if you still have a rear wiper so make sure you get the right one. It is expensive (about $550) and NLA but I purchased one from Atkins.

Hey there! Yes I found a used clock spring with the harness from a forum member. I ripped out the old spliced one and tossed in the oem and everything works fine now i connected my new harness to the 3 female plugs deeper down as you found. However, I have the oem wheel attached.

Thanks for the help guys. A member reached out and sold me a clock spring for 80 bucks and sorting things out now (thanks AICROTARY2). I am not going back to OEM steering wheel but for a more modern looking Nardi wheel that I didn't even have to machine or drill. It looks like it was actually made with the holes at 12 and 6 o-clock so that is awesome and I lucked out for sure. I picked it up from the guy who got that sweet deal on 2 rx7 and tons of parts in an OK storage facility he bought (Cool story if you haven't read it). It's in good enough shape but may get it shaped to a D but for price I'm happy and the Dude was super cool about everything. Reading through old threads and believe I have everything I need to figure out all the wiring and what and how to cut / connect everything while trying to maintain as much factory bits as I can. I did end up picking up a protege cruise control button on eBay but I'll share what I learn along the way if I don't find it already written up here but this forum has been around so long I haven't had an opportunity to share much. It's all here if you dig a bit.
