cleaning of battery acid/rust

I just changed my battery to the westco miata batter with turbojeff battery tray and noticed that my old battery must be leaking battery acid as the beam underneath the battery is rusty. Is there a good way to clean that up?

A few things will work:

1. Sand it off
2. Use something that will strip paint. I used the engine cleaner called Engine Brite. It took the gunk & paint off to the bare metal

Once you have it cleared off primer and paint it.

Are you talking about the frame rail? If so, use a wire brush to scrub any large rust hunks off, then hit it with a scotchbrite pad to get a clean surface. Use an anti-rust primer, then use some spray touch-up paint to color it to your engine bay.

Make sure to mask off where you don't want paint and take your time. Should go pretty easily and quickly.

If it's REALLY bad...scale etc. there's this stuff http://www.por15.com/
that I've used in limited non-cosmetic areas on an antique car. I recommend it only as a last resort, as it's a minor PITA to work with. It sticks to anything, and dries hard as a *****'s heart, but it does work and is paintable.
