Hose it off. I use Castrol Super clean, just take care to not leave it on aluminum parts for a long time or the exterior paint.

I've hosed the engine compartments of 8 of the 9 FD's I've owned. Most of them several times. You can use a pressure washer if you want to just don't point it directly at electrical connections or the foam insulation that is on some hoses.

Do a search this is a common question. I just don't understand why people think you can't hose off the engine...

i use engine clean but i cover the intake system and my alt. just to be safe.

Just about the same thing I did. Started right up w/o a problem.
