Cigarette lighter fuse blowing....

Hi guys,

I have a brand new radar detector that keeps blowing the fuse. I see the fuse blowing as soon as the I plug it in. I try this on another vehicle and it works fine.

I think the plug just creates short as soon as it is inserted. Sadly it works fine on other cars!!!!

I see that video and it seems like only Mazda cigarette lighter works on the that Pontiac without blowing the fuse.

I suppose not all cigarette lighter socket is created equal?

Am I the only one with this problem with FD?

Love to hear if anyone had this issue and rectified it?

Thanks...

Have you tried plugging something else in like a phone charger to see if it blows?

They work fine...

Upon some googling it seems like these sockets and plugs aren't the same and by design it can short this particular socket.

Now how do I keep it from shorting the pos to neg on this socket when I put my Escort in it?

Sounds like your particular radar detector is drawing more amps than the circuit is rated for. I would just hard wire it to a switched 12v power source. Make sure you fuse it.

Not sure if that is the case because I plug it in with it turned off. Still pops the fuse as soon as the plug goes in without it connected to the detector.

I think I know what the problem is. Will post the solution if it works.

Spot the problem in this picture.

The positive was grounding straight to the negative. Moved the tap a little and problem solved.

Who would have thought..
