Blow up or win
You can remove the "housing" but you'll probably break the plastic "tabs" that hold it in place. You might want to try depressing the tabs with a dental pick or something like that in order to avoid snapping them as you extract it.
A simple but quick fix *if you decide to do this* is to put four dots of super glue around the perimeter when you shove it back in and hold it for 60 seconds.
I can't believe I actually recommended this.
(I guess it's better than pulling the dash...but is absolutely the wrong way to do it...)

i was able to pull the inside out last night and get to the wire behind it. Just use your thumb and kinda push and pull on the metal part on the inside.

I can get my gauge cluster out in about 2 minutes flat. It's really not all that tough. PM me if you want instructions on how to do it.
But to answer your original question, it is possible, but difficult. As RonKMiller said, there are little plastic tabs that hold it in, and are really only accesible from the rear. Unless you rig up some crazy tab pushing tool.

Yes you can , Garfinkle opened that hole up and put his exhaust temp gage in that place . the curve ,conture of the dash was addressed (filled) with a matching brass ring around the gage . The ring is black and the install looks factory .A lot of die grinder work but the dash was not removed . The job with making the ring took about 8 hours but it looks so good .
