Why would he thank you? The HK$ downpipe is made for a japanese rx, which has the driver's steering column on the right side of the car. B/c of this, the HK$ downpipe has a crush bend and does not flow nearly as well as most other downpipes out there, like the n-tech, gotham, and m2 one.

True, but the crush bend does give the pipe more clearnace and can make it easier to install. I assume that's why he recommended it.

Not to mention its only mild steel and could rust out.

I say get intake, downpipe, and catback.

If you have a base or R1, the sound installation is much easier. Still, if I were you, I would worry about reliability and basic performance first.

Downpipe - Don't know which brand
Catback - I agree with ijneb, get the Racing Beat Dual Tip
Intake - It sounds like AdamC's cheap bastard mod works well and is...cheap!
Boost Gauge - So you know what's going on

Those mods will make a noticeable increase in power and reliability, and purchase and installation should be under $1,000.

Good luck! Remember, never drive her hard until she's fully warmed up!
Good advice, PP. I would reccomend the same things that PP mentioned. I'd like to throw in my 2 cents...

-A downpipe will lower your underhood temps by a lot, not to mention it won't clog.

-Most cat-backs are the same (performance wise), so it's up to you to choose what style/brand you want.

-As for intakes, Adam C's intake does work well. He has Sonny has dynoed it at around ~12RWHP.

-And the boost gauge is one of the most important things in your car. With the stock sequential system, having a boost gauge is necessary to troubleshoot the system.

-You might also consider new tires -- you would be surprised at what difference it will make.
