Choosing an ECU upgrade....help??
Choosing an ECU upgrade....help??
I'm new to the forum and have been lurking for about week. I've learned a tremendous amount of information, so much so that my head is spinning. I have a 93 touring with 50k miles. It is mildly modded with a Pettit DP, HKS CatBack, Ntech intake. I'm anticipating my first track event (road race/time trial) in February. I also use it as my "fun weekend" car.
I need advice on choosing an ecu upgrade. I've considered the M2 modified ecu which is simple and relatively inexpensive, but requires you send the ecu to them for reprogramming whenever you change your car (for example, adding an upgraded IC). On the other hand, something like the PowerFC is relatively complex for a newbie and may actually be detrimental if used improperly. It does, however, allow for continual improvement with seemingly little limitation. Additionally, it is twice as expensive.
Are the measured parameters on the power fc usable in lieu of standard guages (boost, temps, etc)? Can a newbie use this thing without destroying the motor??
Thanks very much in advance.

The A'pexi Power FC and Commander is very popular, because it's an awesome unit. It is extremely easy to use and anyone can use this ECU without destroying their car. With your mods all you have to do is slap that baby on, which will only take 10min. and your car is ready to be driven. If you plan on getting more mods like an ic, you can take your car to XS to fine tune the ECU on the dyno. I definitely recommend getting the Power FC. I have been using it for over one year and this has to be one of the best mods I have ever done.
You should definately go for the PFC. Now is the time according to the "three mod rule"... You can check www.srmotorsports.com for the PFC, I believe they are running a special now where they give you a free fuel pump and tuning when you buy the PFC with Commander for like $1250 or so. Although it seems like a lot (it is), an ECU is a major major upgrade which shouldn't be taken lightly. Along with the PFC, I would also recommend getting boost and air/fuel gauges if you haven't already. Good luck.

i agree that jason has excellent prices. however, i think that his customer service leaves a lot to be desired. do enough business with him, and you'll see what i mean. i've spent over $2500 with him, and he still can't return a damn phone call.

i wasn't talking about now. he's always had shitty customer service, at least with me. i've been buying parts from him for a little over a year, but i refuse to order anything from him now. i'll pay more for it from someone else, because i don't want to support jason's business anymore. my main problem with him is the fact that he lies to me. everytime i order something, "oh yeah, i have that in stock". three ******* weeks later, i call him back, "oh, that was on backorder, it'll be another month." i'd rather buy whatever for $50-$100 more, and get it a week after i actually order it, not ******* 6-8 weeks later.
If I was buying a new ems right now I would wait for the AEM unit to come out next month. It does everything the PFC does but you can alter the base maps yourself... As it stands right now only XS Engineering can do that. If you have a problem with them then you are **** out of luck! While you can still make adjustments through the commander it still kind of sucks that if you want to say change the transition point of the turbos, or lower the fan temp only they can do it.
