If all you were getting was a boost gauge, sure. However, it's a gauge system, just like the Defi.

I haven't noticed anyone crying about having to buy the Defi controller just to get a boost gauge, because anyone interested in a system like that is going to be running more than one gauge.

 

I really like the Defi BF Gauges, but there's one big problem with them that Autometer has seemed to resolve with these gauges. The BF gauges only come in metric units. If they made SI units, I'd buy them even at that pricey sticker.

 

exactly! so on top of the metric units they also dont offer an amber display. the only series w/ an amber display and standard units is the d-series.... and unfortunatly you loose alot of the functionality of the link system (cant record, and cant give you a warning light or buzzer or whatever). BUT... form over function would have weighed in and i would have broken down and gotten the (for all intensive purposes) non functional d-series gauges.

now it looks like i may be able to have my cake and eat it too! amber lighting, standard units, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY a warning function!!! too bad i just ordered a d-series boost gague (today of all things before i saw this thread)...... anyway... if the autometer ones work out, and seem to be good gauges, ill just sell the defi boost, and get the full set of autometers instead of continuing to buy d-series gauges

 

Those look tight. I would love to place all my stock gauges with those.

 

I hate to burst your bubble, but Defi released an amber version of the BF series not too long ago. But again, no SI units. It's like WTF, how hard is it to make a different face that has SI units.

Sorry to threadjack, but SI stands for Système International d'Unités, which is the metric system (boost measured in Bar). The system using inches, feet, and pounds is known as the English system (boost measured in psi).

Back on topic, they look nice but I wonder how many people are willing to spend that much on gauges. With both Autometer and Defi making high-end automotive gauges, I'd be surprised if they aren't both forced to drop prices due to overproduction. That should be good for most of us.

The color-changing on alerts would be a welcome feature, but I wonder how precise the data-aqcuisition system will be, especially if it's a low sampling rate.

...looks expensive. I think the various colours that the LED can produce is a nice feature, so that you don't have to put light bulb condoms (filters) on to match. Some of the features such as simulation are pretty useless, though.

as fancy as youll see me with my gauges is the autometer cobalt. And teh only reson they will be backlight is because i drive more at night. i dont see why you want flashing magical gauges that can make you coffee and do your taxes. Both will read your gas level, only i didnt have to morgage for mine.

 

Its not a question of beeing Fancy... its a question of the lumonisity that is different. Easyer to read from and well organized. You can data-log your performances, thats what i like about it. Knowing what kind of boost you got at a certain RPM by replaying your recorded run. THATS whats nice about it.

 

Accuracy is a big part of the equation, but for me the quality of all the materials is a biggie. Quality sensors, weatherpak connectors, quality wiring harnesses - that's what makes for a clean gauge install and also keeps the gauge giving you the right information for a long time to come.

I sure would like to see these gauges be of top quality and worth the price. The more options you have for something like this, the better, and I do dig the SD card feature and some of the high-end features of these gauges. But, it's just a substantial leap for Autometer from their current lineup - kind of like Kia announcing a twin-turbo AWD supercar.

We'll know more next January.

Now if someone would just make gauges that were able to cycle between various readings (and have the display change accordingly), they'd have a real winner.

A temperature gauge that could accept multiple inputs to switch between water temp, oil temp, intake and ambient air temp (multiple reading points), and EGT.

A pressure gauge that could accept multiple inputs to switch between oil pressure, fuel pressure, boost pressure (or vacuum), etc.

You could handle almost all of your gauge needs with just 2 gauges and leave them set on the functions you used most often. Unfortunately, it would be cheaper and easier to mount a pair of SPA dual gauges, which is what I'll probably do. I don't want 4 extra gauges when I can have only 2. The only thing I don't like about them is the digital display.

 

I have personally found that there is a large variance in the quality of Autometer's stuff. As pointed out, their "bottom dollar" stuff offers bottom dollar quality. I had one of their short sweep oil pressure gauges. That thing was a POS, but it was only $40.

I also have their full-sweep fuel pressure gauge with memory. It was $225, but it is the best gauge I have ever owned. Looking at the two, it's hard to believe that they are made by the same company. They probably aren't.

****.... yeah i can live without standard units ...i didnt know they added these to their lineup. how do the colors match out gauges? if ts about the same as the d-series ones ill just get a set of defi's (damn i always seem to be the last to findout about anything... hehe)

 

I don't know if anyone here has bought them yet. They look to be a close match to the FDs amber, but probably a little brighter red.

 

Yea, I have Defi gauges myself and I like them, the Autometer offering looks nice and it would fit our cars well but I am another that questions their accuracy. Maybe these are differant but in my experiance Autometer was the cheap, it'll work in mah pick-up gauges.

It's funny how a lot of you are ******* autometer gauges when back in the day's everybody had to have a big *** autometer Tach with a big *** shiftlight, if you didnt have that you were not a racer, Autometer made a name for themselves that is why if you look at almost all NHRA drag racers and nascar use these gauges.

Granted they are Domestic cars it's still works the same...Autometer products are just as good if not better than a lot of gauges out there, basically they are the biggest out there.

 

They look very nice and I would definently consider buying these as a set. I only have one guage and it is the autometer boost gauge(pettit racing colume gauge pod).

 

When OLED tech matures a little, that should be pretty simple. In addition, you could change the general syling (fonts, hash marks, etc) as well. Having a single box that multiple sending units tie into that would handle all the processing should be something that is doable now. That could be placed into the engine bay and have a single wire going to however many gauges you want. It will happen, but the technology needs to catch up to the demand.

 

These are awsome looking gauges...but I think I like the Defi Link series better...even the D-gauges. They just look more professional to me. But its definitely nice that Autometer is stepping up and putting out products like this.

 

with thoes prices, i think i'll stick with my greddy guages.

 

The Defis are still at the top of my list eventhough this is cool for autometer... I just wish Defi came out with the US system instead of metric.
