checking 5th gear synchro

I have the trans out for engine R&R, how do I check out my 5th gear synchro, do I remove just the tailhousing? (I'll be putting in the upgraded5th gear lockout spring as well) is there any post detailing the 5th gear synchro fix process?

Tom
