No, most people's first exposure to the round tail lights probably coincided with the '99 redesign because they were listed as '99-spec on sites like Rotary Performance's which also sold the 1999 front bumper and rear spoiler. I suspect that most people probably don't know they were available in 1996.

I agree with JimLab but for the money, I like my OEM lights.
LOL, It seems like OEM is becoming more and more unique over time. It's like I've customized my car without spending a dime.

I bought the '99 / '96 spec ones, becuse I wanted to be able to go back to OEM, if I wanted to sell. Since fads change, and square lights might be back in style... I figured why not keep my options open.... plus $400 for lights, when Shocks, IC, or Spoilers these days are at least 2x that.... Everything's expensive, set your priorities, and go after what makes you happy...

I agree that they are pretty gawdy, but if someone wants to spend money on it, whom am I to criticize you, your money your car..... but forgive me if it shows up in the list of shame

Damnit, the number one reason I wanted a third gen RX-7 was it was the highest performing car I could afford that didn't have Altezzas for it! When I owned my Honda I hated people coming up and saying stupid crap like
"that's a nice car man, you should put some altezzas and clear corners on it!"
or
"That's a nice prelude, but why are the stock tailights still on there?"
or
"why 16" rims with victoracers when you could have 19s with wanlees?"

Oh well, I'll still buy a FD and I guess I can just hope that this information never makes it to the all show kids.

these lights are quite new still.. im a true yahoo auction ***** and have only seen them pop up within the month.. Now theres quite a few ppl selling them though.

although the US 3rd gens are 10 years old the jdm models didnt stop till the spirit r around 2000-2001, so essentially its still a new design, which may shock some owners who have had their cars for a decade hehee. Take a look in an option magazine and its filled with 3rd gen articles and products. I have a feeling they will be making new things for our cars for a while yet.

did you see the mazdaspeed type II wing go up for grabs? (looks like an advanced version of the 98- wing)... finally got it!

as for the tailights - these have been spreading like a virus on yahoo, as have multiple variations on the front combination lights -

its a sad correlation (sp) but as the price of the car goes down, the amount of shitty stuff people make for it goes up.

They don't cost that much. I paid $400 for mine, and the cheapest I've seen is member Jesse Lau selling them for ~$450 shipped. I've seen the homemade jobs, and there is definitely a difference you can see in comparison, albeit, it's not a significant one - the three round lens have a slight protrusion. Still, it $400+ for the lights brand new, but I figure, I'll take them off and sell them should I ever sell the car. They hold their value, and I see used sets selling for minimally ~$300.

but there's a better pic of it in the mazdaspeed site: http://www.mazda.co.jp/mazdaspeed/
it's in the FD a-spec menu (133,350yen new - ouch!)

I've banned myself from yahoo auctions for another month!! :p

Absolutely fugly. Looks sorta like the cheesy Supra tail lights. I guess I dont' expect more from a guy that had a tail light trim panel (Apex'i/Greddy?) on his car... Well you did paint your FD one of those very trendy late 90's color shifting paints too that went out of style so quickly, so at least your being consistant.

Cheap shot I know, but hey if the shoe fits.....LOL

here's another pic:

also, in a recent issue of option (may have been option 2) -some company was selling the original (square) style lights - but they had coverted the light section with lots of individual LEDs - hideous

yeah, I got that one. I like it because it is essentially the same design as the 98- wing, but slightly bigger - which makes it a bit more aggressive.

I'll let you know how I go with the patch-up job

It saddens me that people are actually "happy" that companies make products for these cars. People with "sport compact" cars need this gaudy crap to get noticed.. Like having useless crap hanging of your car is cool.. Just so you can say you have "mods".. Thank GOD that the people that purchase most of this crap are the same ones with APC or INJEN filters and can't even change their own oil..

I'm nearly embarassed to even own a FD anymore.. The soil has been stained by the WRONG people driving them, and now we all look foolish. Too bad I couldn't afford a FD before they were bastardized. You few should feel lucky!
