Question Changing Trans fluid - How to get off large square plugs

How do you get off the small and large square plugs to drain/fill the fluid? I can get off the hex nut but you supposed to remove the small square plug also. An adjustable wrench with a hammer is not doing it. Also I cannot get the large square plug out to fill it. What tools are you guys using to remove these? Thanks

Looks like a 12mm and a 14mm with a pipe on the end will work. The large nut is bigger than 22mm (my largest metric socket) so I used a 15/16" socket. Does anyone make a square socket to fit the plugs?

you may need to attach an extra bar to the end so that you can get better leverage, thats what i had to do. that sucker was on there good.

An open wrench did not work even with a hammer. But an open wrench with 2 ft of aluminum pipe flattened to fit over the open wrenches worked. I think the thread sealant was making it difficult.

I post with both names depending on which password I remember. Time to sync them both up

PS it is 2.6 quarts (2.5 L) to fill it. Used Mobil 1 75w-90 synthetic again (easy to get at PepBoys) but I think I'd like to try Redline MT-90, Royal Purple gear lub, or something similar next time...

Looks like I will have to trek out in 1" of snow here since I am about 1/4 quart short. PepBoys is only about a mile away so I'm good. I seem to be having a shifting problem. It is Redline MT-90 or something else which everyone has been having luck getting 'scratchy' syncros to work again?

Just upgraded my home built AMD K6-350 to a Pentium 4 2ghz with 80gb drive . Reinstalled everything and of course the password cookies are not there. Also I'm current logged into work via cable internet and Terminal Services. My terminal server at work is not setup to save cookies. Just need to log out and get my email setup to send my password to me

Here is a link to a comparison between Redline and Neo (go to the bottom of the page):

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil.html

Now my problem is what NEO to get http://www.neosyntheticoil.com/gearoil.htm

There are (3) 75w-90 products. Which one to get?

Anyone ever compare Mobil1 gear fluid to Redline and to NEO?

What is the size of the large nut in mm? I think I will just buy the next couple of sized above 22mm next time I'm at Sears...
