changing to synthetic oil
changing to synthetic oil
ive done a lot of searching on here, and i have come to the conclusion that im going to start using syn. oil in my fd. Mobil 1 syn. oil says to change it every 7000 miles, (or somewhere close to that) so would that be safe to do in a rotary as well?
anyone who uses synthetic, how often do you change your oil?

AmSoil series 2000 or Mobil 1, also like Kento says interval should be less in the turbo'd rotary. I change mine at no more than 2K miles, usually less, like 1500 miles, but I am also quite **** about maintenance on my car.

7000 MILES !!!!!!!!!

GOOD GOD MAN, what do you think this thing is, a TANK?
I use Mobil 1 15-50. I change every 2500 to 3000 miles.
I believe that it is more important on a rotary to change the oil more frequently because of the oil injection system. On a rotary engine, oil is injected to the fuel mixture. Injecting dirty oil into the comustion chamber is a bad idea.

At 7000 miles you might even run out of oil, these rotarys like to use a lot of oil.I change my oil and filter every 1500 miles and I'm using Royal Purple. For $10. a quart this **** kicks ***.
Also, www.pettitracing.com has some tips for you on oil changes, just go to their FAQ section.

Are you out of your ******* mind, 7000 miles and you wont be injecting anything but cash to the nearest rebuilder.
Dont be lazy, change it every 1500 miles. I prefer redline 10w30 but im pretty sure all the full syn's are pretty good.
Im not being and ******* but I would recommend that you read up on all the tech stuff before you even get in your car. FD's are very fun cars and can be reliable if you know what your doing but something like not changing the oil for 7000 miles would nearly leave your pan empty along with your pockets. You can find all of this stuff in the tech area..

you should always check your oil in between changes. Like everyone on here should know, oil burns quickly in the rotary. i check my oil like every 2 - 3 weeks at least. very important. If you plan on changing your oil every 3k miles, then you should keep extra oil in your garage or something, cuz u should at least check and add oil at the 1500 mile mark.

Now that the season's over, and have retired the FD3S from motorsports, I plan to extend the oil change interval to 3000 miles or more. I usually have to add a quart at 2000 miles, so perhaps I'll go up to 5000 miles? My current oil has 3500 miles on it, and it still feels "slickery" between my finger tips. Of course the oil pan oil is black because rotaries dirty the engine oil pretty quickly...but so long as you don't feel any grit in the oil, I say why not go up to 7000 miles? You have to take baby steps toward 7000 mile oil change intervals, but I'd be willing to try this for myself
If it were me, I wouldn't push it that far. Human fingers are an extremely poor gauge of the overall state of a motor oil's protective qualities, or its cleanliness.
If anything, stop-and-go driving on public highways is far tougher on motor oil than track events.

Is it bad to have some left over residue from dino oil when switching to syn oil?

I just saw this on the BMW forum. It's interesting as BMW now has 12,000 miles between oil changes after the initial 1200 mile break in!
I heard about fuel dilution of the oil in the rotary and wondered how this happens in a FD...this thread was the only one I could find.
Regardless, there is a site doing a little comparision, as scientific as you can get.
one "test" they compare the longevity of the oil and suggest that just topping off the oil and changing the filter is sufficient to allow >7000 miles between changes!
the wierd conclusion that I cannot quite reason out is that most of the "wear" they detected occured in the first 3000miles and they suggested that people who change there oil more frequently actually might be causing MORE wear to the engine...
(*I'm sceptical on this)
regardless here is the website.

and there current study of Mobil1 vs Amsoil....in the progress.

i said change it at 7000 miles because thats what mobil1 recommends for their syn. oil for piston motors. i run mobil1 syn. in my proetge, and i change it every 7k. i wasnt sure if a rotary could do the same. im sure id have to add oil, but since its syn. oil, it doesnt break down like regular oil, therefore it can last twice as long. does anyone here use syn. oil in a pistion motor?
I've been changing my oil at nearly 1,000 miles for the past few times. Dunno why, maybe because I have a few extra dough in the bank. I use 5 quarts (4.5a fill up and 0.5q for flush) of either RP or Mobil 1 plus an OEM oil filter.
