How often do you change the transmission fluid on a manual tranny in an FD RX7 ??

Every 15k miles. make sure you use synthetic makes a noticable diffrence on the smoothness whne shifting.
If you just bought the car it's a good idea to go ahead and change it. Not a hard job at all.

redline! either MTL or MT-90, i already did a write up on how to with lots of pics, unfortunatly, the search function does not work for finding it for me after they reloaded the server or something, it had pics of my ramp setup, pics of where the bolts are and everything. The most important thing is to just make sure when you are doing it to be able to get the fill plugs off first before you start to try to get the drain plugs off (same exact thing goes for the rear diff!!!) if you dont do this first, your gonna be stuck with one dead FD cuz your gonna have drained all the fluid out and no way to refill it!!!

Good luck dude, and its super easy, this is right up there with the fan mod or changing oil! there is no excuse not to do this

 

how much does it cost for a bottle of redline?

 

I used Mobil 1 full synthetic 75w 90....and it works wonders! But just to make sure, 3 quarts is enough right? I have a '93, because I know there was a slight difference in the capacity.

 

cost about 8 bucks per quart for redline. IDK if it really helps or anything, I just know that I use it and mines is doing just fine

 

Tranny capacity is 2.6 qts, diff is 1.4. Best to get 5 qts if you are doing both in case you spill a little. 3 should be enough for just the tranny and a few minor spills.

If you use synthetic, make sure you use a clean-burning/ashless type. Why? Synthetic holds up better so it doesn't all get burned up. Meaning it will likely leave more carbon build-up which is deadly to a rotary (pistons too, but a rotary more so.) since it is meant to burn oil by design.

 

we are talking about the dif and tranny and think you are talking about the actual engine oil.

 

I have redline in mine, but alot of people claim neo is better.

 

Not a hard job if you can get both drain plugs out. Mine had thread sealant and I had to use a 2' pipe to get the small square one out. I change the trans, diff, brake fluid, and coolant every 2 years or so. If I raced it I would change it much more often...

 

Buy a gallon of NEO from www.bakerprecision.com

If you are careful one gallon is just enough to fill the tranny and the diff. I don't spill like Max does

 

Make sure you get atleast 5 ft. of 3/8" rubber hose to fill the tranny case back up with fluid. 2.5 quarts is what the manual states and thats exactly what it held before it started spilling out.

The manual says 2.5 L = 2.6 US qts = 2.2 Imp qts. I hate to be a stickler, but it is 2.6 qts, not 2.5.

when ever i change tranny fluid, i never spill a drop (not a single drop so far, no kidding)

just use a pressurize hose system like me and you won't spill a drop either (cost me 10 bucks to make from homedepot!!!)

BTW: diff fluid and tranny fluid are 2 different types of fluid just to let the newbies know

 

I used MTL in my transmission. It made a world of difference. I also used Red Line in my diff but I forgot which one.

 

I change mine every 5k miles or so...... (just like I change my motor oil ever 1k miles, regardless of how I drove the car, oil filter every 2k miles)

The more often all the fluids are the better it is for your car.......

The suction hand pump thing equip that I use can be bought from ACE hardware for like $5......

I live in the Middle East - Asia, Weather Temp here in the Winter is 66F - 84F (19C - 29C) and in Summer it is very very HOT! Weather temp reaches 100F - 115F.

Is MTL 80W-90 Transmission Oil good for my 7? Our Oil products are: SHELL HELIX, BP, Castrol, Mobil1... etc

To answer your question, I would order online something other than those. Redline is trash in this gearbox. Gives a very notchy feel to the tranny in all temps. Amsoil mtf is decent and I didn't have an issue with it, but neo synthetic was the best in my opinion. Neo synthetic has a better cold viscosity that helped my second gear notch first thing in the morning. The only issue I had with neo is that after driving it hard one weekend at tail of the dragon, it sheared down and I regained my notchy second. If you daily your seven or don't drive I extremely hard regularly, I would recommend the neo synthetic 75w-90.

I have a question. I was somehow able to put in three quarts of gear oil (32oz bottles). I have read that it shouldn't be able to do this and that it would otherwise seep out the fill hole. Can somebody clarify? I'd rather deal with this while the tranny is out. The fill hole I am referring to is the larger of the two "square" protruding bolts on the driver's side. Thanks!

The transmission itself should take ~ 2.5 quarts at the fill plug. But if you also changed and re-filled the shifter reservoir, which is separate, another .5 quart might be close for a total. ??

 

Transmission was out of the car on a tranny jack. The tranny itself was level. I put three quarts in it without it overflowing. I read another member was somehow able to drain 1 gallon and filled it with 1 gallon. Not sure how accurate that is, but I am only 1 more quart away from that. The previous owner completely drained the tranny.
