Carbon Fiber Hood
Hey just a quick questions, I know absolutly nothing bout carbon fiber hoods cept they are lighter then regular hoods so i ask this questions.
Hehe should it be waxed to give it a nice shiny look, can i make it shiny or will it just always look the same. Also is it no good in the rain?
And just one final quesion, if i do get a hood with air scoops is it bad if i leave it in the rain so water can get it?
Thanks Phil

Most carbon fiber hoods are not that much lighter, that I know of. Maybe save a few pounds. Sure you can wax it if you want. If you get one with 'air scoops' then you will want to cover it somehow so tons of water does not get into your engine bay. You want to make sure that the intake filters and the alternator don't get wet.
the factory hood is aluminum by the way. You can save weight more by changing the battery to a smaller one. And if you get a hood, get a vented one. That is very useful. And yes, if your cf hood has a clearcoat, you can polish it and was it.

When i used to have my CF knightsports replica, i'd keep a trashbag handy if it looks like it'll rain, and just pop that between the engine and hood when parked. IT makes very little difference in the rain as the vents are angled backwards. Also, just about any water that manages to get into the intake will evaporate pretty fast. Viper Jr. told me that his FG Mazdaspeed hood has the vent angled right above the intercooler, so he's pleased with that

Dry CF is the same material as what F1 and WRC cars are made of.
It's much stronger and much lighter.
And much more expensive.
As for RE-A products, all CF products come with clearcoat.
RE-A dry CF Hood without clearcoat weighs only 2.3Kg !!

If you purchase a carbon fiber hood, ask the vendor if it has a layer of clear coat. If not, spend $200 or so having a high quality clear sprayed on They contain a UV inhibitor that will help protect the cf and resin from exposure to the sun. Very important for years of trouble-free enjoyment.
