Well, if it's flooded, you don't have to push it, thats just the easiest way. Other methods include:

Take out the spark plugs, and crank the engine for about 15 seconds to clear out any fueld thats in there. Clean the plugs and put them back in, then try to start it. If still nothing, pour a little Automatic Transmission Fluid in the spark plug holes, then try again.

Also, the ECU has a un-flood setting in it. If you put the accelerator to the floor for a couple of seconds before you start cranking, the fuel pump turns off, so no more fuel gets spewed in with the excessive amount already in there.
