If its from the exhaust that pretty normal without a precat. If its under the under the hood get it fixed ASAFP or your car could burn down. I wouldn't drive it until you have it figured out.

If it got an after market ECU that could explain both of you problems, check the tuning may be running to rich on cold starts.

i have the Power FC .. but the car didn't have this gas smell before. but now it does after i added some more ground wires
and the car still has problems starting up.. it lags..
before the grounds it would take forever just for the car to crank..
but now it cranks but takes some time to get enough juice to start the car

You better find what the problem is your car is serious danger of catching on fire. DO NOT DRIVE IT AROUND TOWN!

My car did the same thing once. Out of nowhere it started smelling like gas in the morning, only for a few seconds then the smell would go away. I took it to the mechanic because I could not find the problem. He didn't find anything either. A week later my FD cought on fire on my way home. Totalled. Turns out it was a cracked oil ring and when the car would warm up the rubber would expand and seal it's cracks. Until the whole thing gave out.

did it do that prior to installing your ECU? or only after you installed your grounds, did you notice right when you tried to start it OR did you notice it AFTER you took it for a "spin" around the block.

it has to turn over a few times before it starts? it might be your cold start setting on your apexi pfc, but also could be something wrong with the fuel system leaking somewhere and not getting to your engine?. what mods do you have on your car along with milage.

i'd check your fuel injector seals. i had the same problem and it turned out that the rubber seals on my rear secondary injector was torn.

FPD = Fuel Pulsation Dampener

RX-7 have inherent problems when it comes to fuel leaks. One of the more popular items in the list to fail is the FPD. Use the search feature and look up the FPD and you'll see the many threads related to the cause, to the aftermath (fires) and the solutions.

Last but not least, I trust a fire extinguisher has it's permanent placement in your FD?
