Car Gauge Advice

just wanna know what everyone likes and dislikes for car gauges (boost gauge...ect) i dont want them just sitting out in the open so im guessing i should go with a pillar? not sure if theres other ways to go. but im looking for advice on what brands, what gauges i should look into getting, should i go pillar or if theres another way.

thanks, mike

Most people seem to like Defi guages... Very nice finish on them, top quality.

As for placements you can put them anywhere from A-piller, Center speaker location, and i have even seen them located where the climate control (heat, speed) switches are.

I have AutoMeter boost and AF on the A-pilar. I have never had any prolbems with them at all. They just dont look as cool as the Delfi ones.

I am very happy with my setup, i feel that it is the ideal choice as far as ease of viewing and having the proper feedback at your fingertips:

If you have a single unit stereo, the space underneath makes for a very stock looking location. VDO gauges look very similar to stock, and are reasonably priced. I suggest boost & water temp.

The center channel gauge pod by Frank is a great product and puts the gauges right in your line-of-sight. The DIN panel above or below the stereo would be OK for more static gauges (temp gauges for example) but is too far out of the line-of-sight for transient gauges (boost, fuel/oil pressure) IMO.

The A-pillar mounting is problematic to me for two reasons -- first, a double gauge pod starts interfering with your vision when taking left turns, secondly, it makes the gauges look too noticeable and looks like any ricer's setup. Again, IMO.

Another option for a single gauge is the steering column pod (RE-Amemiya or Pettit). A lot of people like this for boost.

Please use the search function, there are only so many places to put gauges and they've all been used for years. Besides, "new people" rarely know what the hell they are talking about anyway....

BTW, I love my Defi Link gauges. They have excellent build quality, look great, respond quickly and smoothly, and have been dead reliable (other than an oil temp sensor connection which broke at the oil filter).

Defi 'D' Series. Reasonably priced, relatively acurate and match the stock guages in day and night appearance. Water temp is in an Autometer 'A' pillar pod which was cut down to allow it to sit lower. Boost guage on column pod (unsure of make, but believe Amemiya)

But its more fun to bitch!

The funny thing is that in all my years on the forum I dont believe I have been told to search...Once...You know why? I always search for extended periods of time before I post a new thread. It truely works.

defi boost gauge on the pillar and the pfc commander on the dash. The average user isn't going to need more than that.

Since when do you search first? You have started more redundant threads than anyone I can remember in a long time....all it takes is a bit of effort on your part to find a quick answer.

This forum is here to help but it's hard to help when you have to wade through threads that ask a simple question that's been answered 100+ times....

I've got an AUTOMETER boost gauge in a single-pod A-pillar mount. I am going to go with a Tri-point Engineering dual gauge pod that fits in the stock center speaker spot and put DEFI water temp and air/fuel ratio gauges in.
In my opinion, I think one should only go with a single gauge mounted on the A-pillar.

Since everyone asked me , I don't believe that it is all that important to have a bunch of extra gauges sticking out all over the place. Most of the time it looks pretty silly. Those center speaker gauges are one of the ugliest spots I can think of to put ANYTHING. They completely ruin the looks of the dash. Like Rynberg said, the pillar gauges block part of your view. It seems to me that the "non road racer" should have his gauges in the din slot, or on the steering column. Using those two locations, you can mount up to 5 gauges, and still have a car that doesn't look like it belongs to "Ricky Ricer Racer".

As far as boost gauges go: Unless you are road racing, you don't need to look at it very often. Set your boost, and check it every few weeks. Unless you have a problem with your car, you don't need to be constantly watching it. I looked at my boost gauge the other day. Probably for the first time in 2 months. Guess what?? It was the boosting the same as it was 2 months ago .

I agree about the center speaker spot. I had the center and switched to the A-pillar. I find it ruins the dash and the A-pillar is easyer to read for me (closer).

All the talk about blind spots with the the A-pillar has never occurred with me. I personally dont see the pod being wider/thicker then the pillar to be blocking anything. The only way i can see it being a prob is if you were short and had the seat pulled all the way forward and having your face a foot away from the windshield

I have only one non-factory gauge: A 2-1/16" Autometer electronic stepper-motor boost gauge (ATM-3376 from Summit Racing) mounted on the steering column using a modified Autometer gauge pod.

I'm looking into buying a steering wheel col. gauge holder, most likely I would get the Pettit one without the tabs. It is just so odd that for the little piece of fiberglass(?) or hard plastic(?) that they want $100 for it. I remember back in the days the RE Amemiya cost that much...

Anybody know a good place to get the Pettit?
