Car didn't start. Water temp sensor????

Today for the first time my car didn't start right up. I had to floor the gas pedal and after much smoke it started. I drove it home and it seemed ok. I went out to start it and it did the same thing. This time I noticed that the water temp sensor on my car said -37C. I looked at the voltage on the Commander and it was some crazy number like 4.7v. I turned my car off and then back on and it read normal. Checked the voltage and it was .67v and the car started right up. This is really weird. Can anybody tell me where to start looking?
Thanks
Scott

I'd first check to make sure the connector is on the water temp sensor completely. After that, I'd just testing the wiring to the sensor.

Where is the temp sensor located? I am in the middle of moving and I packed my service man. away. It is not the sensor by the thermostat right?

Is the red plug below the Temp sensor the PFC uses?
