Question car = paint mixer

ok. i put a rx7.com clutch in summer of 2001, drove the car for 4 months and the motor blew. had the motor rebuild in summer 2002. shortly thereafter, i started to notice shuddering when starting in 1st. revving higher prevents the shuddering. i don't mean it shudders a little bit. damn think bounces side to side like a fudging paint mixer. it went away in real cold weather, but on warm days it comes back. shudders just as bad when warm.

idle is normal. don't remember number, but idles fine. started after rebuild at end of summer. no mods. no racing except for one pass at 1/4. don't know vacuum. doesn't seem like engine problem.

Your not talking about the 3-k hesitation are you? If you are it could be a number of things. Go to lightning in a world of thunder for possible solutions for your problem.

i don't think it has anything to do with how the engine is running. this shudder is when i engage the clutch in first gear from a stop. it feels like its slipping and grabbing repeatedly. i think something is screwed up with the flywheel or clutch

So it only happens when you engage the clutch?

Does it feel like the car is going to die, or does it just buck a little?

My honda does this also, i notice it worse on cold (florida) days, It only happens when im releasing the clutch into first, i havent had it checked out because it stops after it gets warm and its a honda...
Maybe you ride your clutch or something, but it sounds like my situation, which is a clutch problem (mine has 113,xxx on the stocker)

You put in a heavier duty clutch without having the flywheel resurfaced? Due to the amount of clutch slipping involved with driving an FD, the clutch usually heats up the flywheel and can "warp" the surface. It is like a warped brake rotor. When you put the new clutch in it may be a heavier duty clutch and may put even more heat to the flywheel, thus doing more damage. If you didnt resurface the flywheel, which you probably didnt have done, this is the problem. Take the trans back out and flywheel off and have it turned.

Good call cdk! That is what it sounds like to me as well. Though I'm no expert. Just general knowledge there.

Check the drivers side engine mount. If yours mounts never have been changed, most likely it is that. Most left engine mounts are broken on Fds but the owners down know it. But when you work on their cars and know what to look for, you find that out. That last three cars that I helped with the engine rebuild all had broken original left mounts.

Also, if the power plant frame wasn't installed properly or is broken, this can allow extra movement, but usually forward and backward,
