Can someone help me choose?

In using the search, I couldn't really find an answer to my specific question so here I am. (But I think I know what most people will say about it anyway, just want to be sure.) I local FD guy has the following FS, copied from his ad:


Turbo: Innovative turbo systems 60-1 dual ball bearing, T4 P-Trim undivided turbine side with a .81 A/R (I had this built by Terry @ Innovative specifically for a rotary with a large street port.)

Exhaust Manifold: SS equal length tubular with an HKS wastegate flange.

Wastegate: HKS 40 mm standard gate

Intercooler: Greddy 2 row (core only)

Exhaust: Apexi N1

ECU: Apexi Power FC with comander


He wants $2300 for all or a bit more for each to part out.
My question is.... do I use my money to get a motor in a month or two, which would leave me not broke, but use basically all I've saved for that very purchase? Or do I snag this up now cuz of the price, spend a bit for pump, injectors, ic piping, etc and have a nice setup for a while but have to wait alot longer for the engine?

One point at getting the turbo now is that I plan to buy a motor before long anyway. So blowing the one I have, which I guess wouldn't take long on an original 93k miles, would mean replacing something that I would anyway. Do I spend less for more fun now and go kaboom? Or more in a month for more reliability and have less fun and miss out on a good price? Oh, and I have a daily driver if that changes anyone's answer. Thanks for your input guys!

i would get the motor before the turbo. if i understand things correctly... i think i do, but you probably wanna wait for someone else to first. i want to get a single eventually too, but i'm going to hold off till my engine goes first. it would be a shame to get a nice big brand new power screemer on there and have your engine throw an apex seal right into the shiny new turbine blade. then you have to replace the engine AND parts of the turbo, if not the whole thing... also, what other mods do you have so far?

Nothin really, as far as mods. Sits the way I bought it with an air filter and some sort of exhaust. Looks to me to be just some kind of welded on muffler tho.

And you make a good point about fryin the turbo with a nice piece o' seal. Didn't stop to think about that one. Maybe I'll just pick up that pfc from him.... I at least wanted that.

do you even have any mods on the twins yet? why does everyone want a single turbo so bad when their car isnt even done right with the twins.

ok you have some kind of air filter and a muffler on a 93k mile engine. ok great your car would struggle to get high 14s in the 1/4 mile.

so why dont you get some sort of computer, intercooler, fuel system, real intake, downpipe, midpipe, real catback, have the car tuned and raise the boost??? That will land you in the low 13s and youll be happy

a single turbo setup done right costs a ton of money

Surge, basically the parts u mention are in the "etc" I talked about. Extras I'd pick up on top of what he's selling. He has the ic, computer and exhaust. The "etc" I'd pick up would be dp, mp, ic piping since the ic doesn't come with it, bov, injectors/fuel rail, pump.

But after pugg reminded me that chunks of seal spiriting thru your nice new turbo will put a damper on your day.... not so sure that's a good idea first. I AM getting compression tested this Fri, that may give me a better idea of how long she can keep takin viagra for before she says it's bedtime.

he high 14's? CJ ran 13.90's with Intake and CB on 103k original motor.

if you look at the list surge monster, he's planning on getting some of those things, but you're right... poolman, you need to get the basics out of the way first too. if i were you, and i'm not so it really doesn't matter too much, i'd get PFC and then get a good intake, dp, cat-back so it can breathe properly. radiator and AST are important too as anyone will tell you. get the basics out of the way while you're waiting on the engine to die. when it croaks, THEN work on the single you'll need some fuel stuff to support it too though. happy hunting.

rx7 wishing I could give a **** less what some guy somewhere ran in his crapped out 103k mile engine

pug and poolman we are all on the same page sorry if I was being an ***. I feel theres a logical progression of mods that needs to take place and everyone that sidetracks is missing out and will be negatively affected in the future because they lack that experience.

Do mods ONCE and right by planning for them to stay with the single turbo if thats what you want in the future.

I am positive that the guys with mildly modified twin cars have absolutely no idea the cost of converting to single the right way.

Here I made my sig all my mods and remember this doesnt include the new ported motor I am getting right now and having intercooler pipes, oil lines, brackets, couplers, heatshields, vacuum hoses, polishing etc and also no labor is shown here! and I still have to pay to get it tuned, get a radiator, change ALL fluids and fuel filter. Then you have suspension and body to still cover...this is how some guys have dropped 40k-80k into their cars and you dont believe it. It adds up

Thanks for your input guys! I'm thinkin it's best to get the motor first, considering what could happen to the nice new turbo should the orig. go, and that it'll cost me more than what I'm willing to afford right now to switch to single. But, I'll still probably pick up that pfc and maybe the exhaust from him. Guess it couldn't hurt to start off with a computer before a new motor. They're still hella cheap w/o gettin the whole package.

$2300 for all of that stuff is a GREAT deal. Buy it if you don't NEED a motor yet. You don't have to install the Single turbo right away.

i want to go to a TO4s eventually but for now its my daily driver and i'm just going to enjoy it till my engine and turbos crap out on me. i'll put my sig up with my mods done/to be installed. i need to get a boost gauge, boost controller and new WT gauge follwed by adding a hi-flow cat, GReddy 2-rom FMIC, GReddy elbow and BOV next. after that comes upgraded injectors (1300secondary, 850 primary), fuel pump (it should be time for a new one then anyways) and ignition amp. imight get a set of power pullies too, but not sure about underdriving the water pump. i think that's about it for the engine for me until the rebuild and new turbo comes around. oh yeah, i'm gonna get a dual oil cooler too. i know i'm probably missing something there but that's the gist of it all. when my power is done, i'll work on suspension and then looks (rims, body etc) i know how much what i'm looking at is gonna run me just on parts. when its not my daily driver anymore (hopefully this summer) i'm going to start doing all the work myself. it looks like another $25-30k should do it in parts that i've found so far. that's alot but its also gonna be over YEARS

I agree if you don't even have full exhaust yet, and sounds like you don't know all there is to know about the rotary then I'd chill out for a bit and get the motor done first.

Why u gotta burst my bubble? I was livin in my own little world not even once considering that this stuff may be gone. (No, I've been at work all day and not once did it cross my mind that it'd be a smart idea to call him before it's too late.) I dunno, the ad was up on a local club site on as of Mon so....? Hmm... damn. Pfc is gone. That blows. I had that 5 yr old on xmas feeling all day until now. He still has everything else tho. Doesn't help me THAT much cuz the pfc was the only thing I REALLY wanted for that price, and only thing I could safely put in for now. Oh well, guess I'll just hold on to the rest of it til I get a new motor put in.

buy the motor it is a proven fact that a rotary will last 2x as long if ther is a replacement in the garage waiting!

I think it's important to consider that just because your car has high mileage for a rotary engine doesn't mean it's gonna go anytime soon for sure. I too have 93k on my original engine and it still pulls strong. I have no symptoms of seal deteoration (used to have white smoke on start up but that stopped). I recently had a major tune up done, and a compression test - which it did good on - and my mechanic (a rotary mechanic) said my engine was strong and should last about another 10-20k w/no foreseen problems. Of course that is no rock solid guarantee. Rebuilding now still may be a good idea as it could save you the trouble later. Just some stuff to consider...
