Can I Disable the Antenna?
Can I Disable the Antenna?
I recently installed an after market digital CD/Radio in my FD.
Each time I turn it on the antenna goes up.
Even if it is just to display the time, the antenna goes up.
Is there a way to disable this?

No fuses that only control the antenna. Just slide the head unit out and disconnect the wire that controls the antenna on the wiring harness. I think it's the orange one, but it's been a couple years since I put the head unit in my FD.
That's goofy it does that, most aftermarket head units are smart enough where the antenna only goes up when you have the RADIO on, not when you're listening to a CD or MP3.
Yeah, pull the head unit back out and disconnect the wire. Should take all of 2 minutes.

Mt after market deck did the same thing. I added a swich to the power antenna line so it will only come up when I flick it. I hated how it would come up when I was listening to a CD/ipod.
Or if you don't want it coming up at all, just disconnect the plug that goes into the antenna unit. Open the little black door that access the jack, pull the jack out, feel around in there. There are two plugs, one facing inboard and one facing aft. Disconnect the one facing aft. If you unplug the one facing inboard, the antenna won't function, either will the Bose system though. That's what I did and it works fine.

On my FC I had only the diversity antenna (one in windshield) plugged in. Worked good enough for me. According to what I've read (and the fact that my car has 2 antenna jacks) the FD also has a diversity antenna on the touring models inside the hatch glass. That's what I'll be hooking up.
you didn't do it correctly. I have aftermarket stereo and it only come on when I switch to radio. it sounds like you connect the antenna power to the on power cable. there is a separate wire for antenna switch.
Those of you who have removed the plug from the antenna, does that just keep the antenna from rising? Or does that completely disconnect the antenna from the head unit?
I want to disable it from rising because it looks like crap when it's up, but I don't want to do that at the expense of losing reception. I listen to AM radio a lot :-)

well not all aftermarket radios have a seperate ANT wire from REM, the REM wire will provide 12V at super low AMPS to power relays like your ANT or an amplifier, SOME higher end radios will have a seperate wire for the ANT and REM so that you can have an amplifier powered while in CD or AUX mode or whatever and keep the ANT down, a simple solution to this is a $2 toggle switch, run in inline with the wire going to the ANT and you will be ok, %99.9 of Aftermarket radios have a LIGHT BLUE wire for the ANT and if you splice into that and put the toggle on you will be ok, I have been meaning to do this myself as I rarley listen to the radio anyway, I had it on my FC worked like a charm..
for those that run subs in the car this switch can be used for the AMP as well, I call it the 'cop switch".. example, cruisin down the road and your 12's are making the car next to you shake and you see a cop.. $200 ticket comin your way or just flick a switch... then even if he pulls you over you can crank it up and no bass... "sorry officer that was another car mine has stock speakers." crank it up "see sir, no bass here!" They can't MAKE you pop the trunk so just point out a car in the area and say. "I think it was that Honda that went flying past me like I was sitting still a while back"
And there you have it... LOL

I had the same problem when I put an aftermarket deck in my FD, to resolve this I went into the trunk. Worked my way though the plastic interior of the trunk to the antenna and unplugged the antenna.
Problem solved!
Strange thing was sometimes when I turned my FD on the antenna still went up, not sure how but it did, however it eventually stopped.

Two possibilities. And these are the only two barring a hardware malfunction.
Installed incorrectly
or
Head unit is too cheap and does not have a dedicated power antenna wire.

Sure the cops can't MAKE you pop the trunk, instead they'll just cuff you, put you in the back of the patrol car, and rip apart your entire car and then leave you on the side of the street so you can put it back together yourself if you refuse.

To search a vehicle, they must have probable cause. They can't cuff without due cause. They would be be so deep in **** they might as well become plumbers.
very doubtful they will do that over a loud radio, unless you are being the *****, if you are nice and treat them with respect chances are they will do the same...
I unplugged my antenna power cable. Even my monster hands/forearms could fit back there through the jack area.
I only did it because the antenna will power up just fine, but won't go down (I would have to manually push it). So I disconnected it. But I have noticed my radio reception has suffered, however.

oh yeah, the factory power antenna definitely makes a difference in radio reception. The problem is that it's really obnoxious sounding when the motor runs, at least on a car with a lot of miles. It really gets bad once you pull the motor apart to replace the mast. The power antenna also makes your FD look like an RC car from the outside when it's up.
alright. first of all "probable cause" is written as such that an officer can and will ALWAYS have a cause to search your vehicle. for example, if he asks you "can I take a look around your car" and you say no. you just gave him probably cause. so, if he asks. you either say yes and he looks. or you say no and he looks. its purposely written loosely.
2nd. its the blue wire behind your head unit.
