Cali ECU
I have a 94 touring, and I'm trying find out if it has a Cali ECU or not. Would that info be on Carfax? Mahjik told me "As far as I know, there is no way to tell from the ECU itself. The only way I know to tell is to hook it up without the blue EGR plug and see if you get a CEL. If you get a CEL, its a Cali or '94 ECU." Where is the blue EGR plug, and what is a CEL? I assume he means it will throw a code by saying I'll get a CEL, but I've been wrong before. I've been having problems starting my car and I want to try swapping my buddy's ECU and see what happens.
Also, I have a buzzer going off about 20 seconds after you turn the key to on position. The last time it happened, the wire for the coolant sensor had come apart, but I've checked that and it's still good. What else would set the buzzer off?

Check the part number on your ecu (should be a big white sticker). IIRC, it's the first set of numbers that you're supposed to cross reference.

Check the part number on your ecu (should be a big white sticker). IIRC, it's the first set of numbers that you're supposed to cross reference.

My buddy told me it will buzz like that if the ECU is bad too, but I'm not sure he was 100% sure about that. And I think he mentioned something about the air bag too.

There should be a "vehicle emissions control information" sticker on your hood (on US cars, anyway). In the middle of the sticker is a box that says "conforms to US EPA and state of California" if it was a California car.

If it's the original ECU (as far as you know) a 94 federal ECU is the same as a Cali (any year) ECU.The EGR is (located on the LIM = lower intake manifold) and will have electrical wires hooked to it.

Update:
My title didn't say anything as to what state it's from, so I'm going to check the ECU number. I would have done that already but I got tied up today.
dontlift- Thanks for the pic. The car already had the carbon fiber hood when I bought it so that sticker might be long gone, but I think he gave all the stickers to me in a folder or something, I gotta look for it.
CantGoStraight- yeah as far as I know it's the original ECU. So you're saying it doesn't really matter which ECU I swap in, they should all work? If so, awesome, thanks.
93VRTouring- I would get the CEL every now and then before but never knew what was wrong since everything seemed to be working correctly otherwise. When I checked the codes recently I had the EGR code and one for the speedo, but I think the speedo one was probably just because I had pulled my gauge cluster without disconnecting the battery. No, I got mine in Sept 04 from someone in Denver, which is why I was thinking it could be from Cali originally.
I got the crank angle sensors from my buddy today, so I'm gonna go put those in just in case (the car was running strange before, now it just won't start. Full story in link below)

So I guess it wasn't originally sold in Cali.

The 95 CALI doesn't have EGR either....
I must have confused you. WHile the Federal model 94 ECU isn't specificly a Cali. ECU it is idetical in that it looks for the EGR signal, and is the same as the 93, 94 model in all other esepects. The preferred ECU is that of a 93 of 95 Federal model ECU. I'm not positive but I but IIRC the 95 Cali. ECU also looked for the EGR where as the 95 Federal did not because it didn't even have one on the engine. The reason most people shy away from the 94 Federal ECU is because it looks for a signal from the EGR and has to be tricked in order not to throw a code. If you are planning on using the EGR with electrical feed back then any Cali. ECU will work fine for your 94 Federal application.

CantGoStraight- you're right, you sure did confuse me, haha. I think I'm just gonna swap in an ECU and see if it starts, and I'll look for an aftermarket one soon after. I'm going to need one soon anyway.

so, can someone tell me this...I have a cali car bought in cali (now in nebraska with me) I removed my emissions so I have the blue plug. Will I need to put resistors in the plug, or should I just leave the egr plugged into it and let it sit under the uim?
