C5 Z06 Style Hatch

Just curious if anybody has attempted something like this. For those who don't understand what i'm talking about i'll attach pictures momentarily. The C5 Corvette's base model had a long large rear window hatch like we have on the RX7 and majority of hatchback style sports cars have always had, but the C5 Z06 had a smaller rear window at more of a vertical angle and gave the car such a more aggressive look. I'd like to see someone do that or photoshop it atleast to a FD to see what its like. I think if someone could do it right it would look fantastic. My example, and after going through many many photos i think these two are the best pics to show what i mean. If you save them in their own folder and just scroll and let them flash back and forth you really see what i mean.

Z06

They did that to save (glass) weight if I recall correctly. And note, they changed it on the C6, because it's better aerodynamically I believe.

Most Corvettes including the one in the top picture have a removeable roof so they are targa roofed cars (to use the term Porsche uses). The car in the bottom picture is a FRC= Fixed Roof Coupe, they did it to save weight with the reduction in glass area and also to stiffen the chassis since it then had a non removeable roof that was integrated into the chassis structure.

I think it would be pretty hard to integrate this design into a FD since the rear quarters are designed to mate with a rear hatch and it would probably be less aerodynamic due to the sharp cutoff behind the roof.

The FRC was just the predecessor to the Z06. The sport version of the corvette in 97-2000. The Z06 name came out in 01. Still think it would look good if done right.

Why? The stock rear window we have is better looking than either of the ones posted.

I have always thought the corvette and Viper share alot of the RX7's stlying... If you could cross a viper and a vette it would look like a FD...

I read or heard it in a documentary some where a while back that when developing the C5 vette the chevy engineers did spend a good amount of time in talks with the lead engineers on the the FD project, that was the reason why there were so many similarities in design between the FD and the vette

at the time that our cars were produced they were so far ahead of their time in both aero effective styling and performance weight management that most car companies didnt catch onto the same drift till the late 90s early 2000s

I'm sure someone could do a photoshop but I'm not thinking it would look good on an FD.

huh thats interesting. You can see it, hell from doors foward its copies the FD.

As far as the rear hatch mod. I swear I have seen pics of a car in Japan with something similar to the Z06 style.

C5Z engineers could compromise aerodynamics for chassis rigidity and weight due to the car having 400hp. It already had plenty of grunt to get the car to 175-180mph but knew faster lap times could be achieved by reducing weight and improving chassis strength.

FD needed to focus more on aero and chassis since the engine output was the only compromise. Hence reason for rounded hatch glass. Makes for very smooth airflow off the car.

With that being said. I'm running a gt4094r and on the next tune hope to hit close to 550. I think i can afford a little bit of a loss in aerodynamics if it were to look good. Anybody good with photoshop?

I too have tried to picture the fd with a shorter rear glass. I was first intrigued by a FC seen on here somewhere that had the rear area turned into a bed, like a truck. A drift car I believe. While the end result wasnt my cup of tea, I have sat there and looked at my car wondering what a different shaped glass piece would do for the rear. Same as the c6, I would bring the glass down sharp with the angle of the front of the rear hatch opening and then curve it out to meet the back of the hatch. Almost like removing the hatch glass and putting back upside down.
Hmm....

I was thinking a hatch with maybe a 2 foot tall rear window and an angle and slight curve just like the C5 z06 and the rest just fiberglass or carbon. I think it would look sweet with one of shines low pro spoilers.

i've never really noticed the difference. it would look neat if it could be done on an FD tho. photoshop it on an FD and post the results. now i'm interested in seeing.

That looks too Fiero/Ferrari if you ask me. Maybe without the fiberglass extending all the way back in place of the hatch glass it would look good
