A/C Question - Evacuating the system...

Well, I think I'm going to finally switch over to r134 since I can get recharge kits on my own for that.
The AC shops want about 200-250 to to the conversion and recharge my system.
So I was thinking about doing it myself.
First off, how do I evacuate the system?
My system has had a leak for along time and my AC has not been working for a couple of months.
Would you think the freon has all leaked out and I can just use the die, find the leak, fix/replace, then just charge with r134?
I know, replace the couplings and oil up the system first.

Just wondering if there was anything specific I should do to clear out the system before recharge with r134.
And would I run into any complicatoins with the r134 in a system designed for r12? (not "how cold is it" problems but more like any complications...)

Take it to the shop and have them evac the system, it only takes like less than ten seconds, install the retro kit yourself and have them check for leaks and do a recharge.

You are going to have to replace the receiver dryer and possibly the compressor (depending on age) and all the seals. The R12 system is colder than the new, but not Ozone safe.

If the shop is going to do the retro for $250 for the conversion and also recharge it, I'd say that's a pretty sweet deal. If you want it done right and to last a long time, replace the receiver/dryer and compressor too.
