A/C How cold is cold?

Well I finally did it, after lurking on the message boards for a while a finally got an FD.
Here are the mods: PFS intercooler, RE amemiya air intake, downpipe, racing beat exhaust, and PFC does around 280rwhp at 10psi in 90 degree Texas heat. I would go higher but the stock injectors are running out of room.
Do those numbers sound pretty good?
Anyway while driving the car I noticed that it was hot like SOB during the day even with the a/c on. Well I checked the old bubble meter and it was pretty white, so I figured I need freon. Well let me get to my question, how cold does your a/c get in 90+ temps. ie could you wear a suit and be comfortable? Obviously the guys in the south know what I am talking about.

I live in central florida and have never needed it past 3.
Mine shoots ice- but i believe it was converted to r134a or something. (93 system converted to new) After about 10 minutes on 3- 1 keeps it cold.

Well I had my stock radiator replaced and I hope that they didn't screw up any a/c lines but I will also get it checked for leaks tommorrow. Really I can't believe that it is that cold, but I hope mine will be the same way.

Hey welcome to the FD world. My a/c is very cold. I believe its R-134 as well. (94 model) From what I understand most a/c's on FD's are weak.

FD's didn't come from the factory with R-134 until the 1995 model year, everything before that was R12 unless it was converted.

My A/C does pretty well as long as the condensor hasnt heat soaked. Basically, I can fire up the car and it blows at 40 degrees unless I get stuck in too much stop and go traffic. After about 10 minutes of slow driving the temps will clib quite alot. On the freeway it will continue to blow at 40. If I stop the car for more than about 10 minutes the condensor will heat soak and nothing can get the A/C to blow below about 70.
I have an r-12 system that has been converted to r-134. Plus this is in the 105-115 heat of Southern AZ.

My bad, must still be R12. What do you look for to tell if its R-134 or R12?

I'm surprised that its as cold as it is. My first gens had terrible a/c.

HEY Toms93R1, I spent a lot of time in Tempe. Went to Az state. Nice and hot this time of the year.

Well my car had intake temps of around 60C and coolant temp at around 95C, was my car heat soaked? Got the readings off my power FC, are they accurate? I built up this heat from a 4 hour drive. Oh yeah with my kind of power how good is 20 mpg. Motor was just recently rebuilt.

My ac blows well cold enough for Texas heat. Fire up car put on 4 after about 5-10 min switch to 2 and keep the car cool there.

I got 22mpg on the HWY with dp,cb,intake, intercooler. With no cruise control, you must be getting into boost ALOT.

#1 If your hitting high injector duty cycle its either your fuel filter is getting a little high in mileage or you need to upgrade your fuel pump, with 301RWHP I hit 90% injector duty with stock fuel system, clean injectors should be good for 330RWHP @ 85% injector duty, however I am putting in 1600cc secondaries, FPR, and Fuel pump all at the same time so I probably wont get to test my hypothesis.
2. DId you actually dyno your car? For no midpipe and really hot 280RWHP is really good for 10psi, I made 301RWHP with Midpipe, and 12.6psi. Is the PFS IC Front Mount or Stock Mount? My A/C Doesn't blow anything cold, and if you got a FMIC your going to need to put in a another fan or duct air in from somewhere else even if your refrigerant is bad (at least thats what the Greddy install manual said...) because the AC Condensor mounts behind the FMIC. And when you say PFC do you mean a Power FC ecu with the Commander? Also I am getting 22MPG, was getting 24MPG when I first got the car.

a/c

I had a lot of trouble getting my last FD to blow cold, turns out the compressor was bad. I have one now with only 13k miles on it, and still it has a little bit of a hard time cooling the black interior in the heat of the day. I live in Denver, moved here from New Orleans where you will sweat your *** off without A/C. It is my second vehicle, and that is one of the reasons. I try to only drive it late afternoon or evening during these hot summer months because of the shear heat issues with rotary motors as well as the cooling problems. Can't wait for fall though

Found out I have an exhaust leak... ahh now I get why my damn a/c isn't blowing so cold.... mmmm fresh motor air! I converted mine.... It blows REALLY cold when its like 80* outside... but when it hits 100 i'm kinda hosed. I guess it comes w/ the front mount territory in texas...

My intercooler is I guess a standard mount with some cover in front of it to redirect airflow and I should have said I have a Power FC with commander. I also have a upgraded fuel pump. Oh yeah my coolant temps seem kind of high with a fluidyne radiator (95C). What do you guys think?

WRONG!

The ecu injects fuel based on a map. Therefore, your injector duty cycle is ALWAYS the same for a given load and rpm.

A clogged filter or inadequate fuel pump may not supply the fuel the ecu expects but has NO effect on injector duty.

I live about 2 hours north of Houston in East Texas, our climate is pretty much the same as yours...slightly less humid however. My A/C works well (40 deg in traffic, 35 or so on the highway) unless the interior is real hot, then it has a hard time pulling the temp down, and getting everything comfortable, although I think that has more to do with volume of air being pushed around as opposed to BTU capacity of the system. Get your windows tinted if they're not already, and get one of those windshield reflective shade thingies....they'll make a world of differance, also make sure your condenser isn't full of bugs and junk.

My A/C does a good job cooling when it's set on 4, but on the rest of the settings it pretty much sucks. I can only take it off 4 for about 10 minutes before it gets warm again. Kind of annoying.

Now there's a good point. Backflush (carefully) the condensor with a garden hose, you'll be amazed at the crap the comes out. If you use a pressure washer (it's tempting) you'll bend fins - guaranteed.

Window tint helps dramatically, buy the best heat and UV rejecting stuff you can find - it's worth the extra money. It's also worth paying a pro to install it.
