Buying used turbos
I just bought some used turbos(60K supposedly). They look great. The person discontinued his email address, which could mean absolutely nothing, but still started me thinking. Is there anything in particular I (or anyone) should look for when buying used turbos?
When I say they look great, it means there are no cracks. I'm just a little worried because of the email thing. I'm going home to look at them tonight, and I just want to know if there is anything I should look for.
Like...how hard should you have to push the wheels to get them to spin, any hidden cracks, etc. Stuff like that.
Thanks
Jim

Let me start by saying you have 2 housings (snail looking sections) one is intake which is alum and the other is exhaust which is brown.
What you need to do is seperate the exhaust housing from the intake housing so you can inspect the turbine wheel and shaft. If the motor they were on ever blew up the apex seal (or a piece of it rather) probably went thru the turbine wheel. This is very common on used sets of turbos. If you take it apart and the fins are all chewed up your screwed.
Also, there is no way of telling without taking the exhust turbine housing off. Its not that hard just use something like WD40 then use a hammer and punch to pop the bolts, that kinda breaks them up some so you can turn the bolt without it snapping the head off.

yes...check the wheels...
also...stick your fingers in the snails and see if there is any oil residue on the inside...if there is ANY than you got a leaky set..at least internally.
my real two cents is....never buy used turbos unless you want to spend more money soon after.
its a waste of cash in my opinion.
good luck

I lucked out. The ones I bought look great. Hopefully they perform as well as they look.
