-there is a blown gasket on motor
-driver side door handle is broken
-no lock on the trunk

Have you seen this FD in person? Do you have a link to the ad?

There are a lot of FD owners in this area, maybe you can get someone to go check out the car with you.

Have you done any research on what this car is and how to take care of the car?

Not enough info. How many miles? Interior condition? Paint? Does it run at all? Is it a piece of junk?

Cars like that are typically beat to hell all around. They're hard to work on, have major body damage, and no interior worth speaking of. Not to mention all the half-fixes and not-quite-working-right mechanical aspects.

$5k is not a bad offer if you can't find anything else about it and it's a 5 speed. But expect to have a major project on your hands unless you intend to strip it and build it up for racing.

If it's been through 5 owners, it may look stock now, but chances are there were some non-stock parts on it at some time. What type of mileage on it? What gasket is the problem? Maybe they mean apex seal, . First thing in order is to check the compression. If that's good and it's the LIM gasket or something else, then $5K might be a steal, or it might be the mother of all money pits. As money said, make sure you have some extra cash in the bank, because just keeping your fingers crossed isn't going to help at all.

$5k is usually a scam. Which is why the first thing I asked is if he's seen the car in person.

i have seen the car in person, seller told me the motor needs to be rebuilt because of the apex seal but it does run around the block. the chassis has about 118k miles, the tt motor 30k miles, and it has 30k miles on the 5 speed tranny with stage 2 clutch. overall the car is clean, interior needs some cleaning no cracks or tears no rust, body is clean and carfax is clean. im fully aware that this will cost alot to fix. i have done alot research regarding to rx7 and i understand these are costly hobbies but hey life is short.

thanks for your reply, let me know if theres anything and please post your suggestion.

thanks

This car probably only makes sense if you are actively looking forward to having a project sitting in your garage for 6-12 months while you spend $5-$10k more on it. (And still end up with a car worth no more than $10k or so because of the chassis miles.) Financially, buying a running car with lower miles for for $15k would be a better idea

With a bad motor a beat to hell RX7 is not worth 5k. It will cost you a bare minimum of $3k to get that thing back on the road so now you will have an $8k ugly POS. More than likely it will be closer to $5k if you dont to the swap and all the work yourself, so now you have a $10k ugly beat to hell car. Dont do it, turn and run as fast as you can.

this will be my project car, mainly im buying a beater is because i wanna learn and experience. im gonna diy all the way, im still debating on rotary motor or ls1. its because of the reliability of this cars, i wouldnt spent 15k knowing that something will go wrong soon or later therefore chances are i would have to take it to a shop. i perfer a beater where as im going take apart everything and rebuild it ground up and if anything does go wrong, atleast i would have a better knowledge.

more suggestion please, if its really not worth the buy let me know or if it is dont be shy. my eyes are wide open for suggestion. thankssss

I agree. It's not worth it. You'd be suprised what will need to be fixed and you're looking at entering a financial nightmare. Ever wonder why it's been through 5 owners? R U N A W A Y

it's a 93....non-R1....blown motor. Unless the body and interior are in great condition, I would pay 3-3.5k at most.. You've got a long road ahead of yourself. unless you have lot's of time and friends(not to mention$$$$$) to help, you'll have this car sitting for a year+

As opposed to a lot of the above opinions, I think that for $4-5K, this is an OK deal. You seem to be reasonably knowledgeable, and willing to take on a big project.

If the body, interior, and most of the suspension/driveline is sound, I say GO FOR IT!

Just remember, you WILL have times when you regret the decision, but if you stick with it, this seems like a project with a good future.

Good luck!

Sounds like you are going into this with the right attitude. If you have an additional $8000 (minimum) to put into this, go for it. Maybe you can get the purchase price down a bit.

I say go for it, but expect a BIG project that may last years depending on your budget and expectations. As far as budget is concerned, take what ever figure you have in your head, and add 50% to it. There is gonna be a lot of stuff that will need to be replaced on a car that has 118k if you do it right.......

good luck

As the other said, if you intend to buy this car get ready for blood, sweat and tears are you ready for that challenge? most of us did.. my suggestion is save your 5k, save more $$ and look around for a clean, slightly modified rebuilt engine around your area. The info you told us about this car is gonna be lots of repairs, from my calculations maybe youll end up spending more than 10k..( from modifications, performance, etc...)so take your time thinking about this one, shop around.

dude seriously, ill sell you mine. i am asking 17,000 though, so if you need to..... save up. i have 52k original miles on motor and chassis, its very well takin care of. have all service records from when it was bout new in 94(oil changes, inspections, full service reports, aftermarket parts) she's pretty much bone stock, and ready for some power mods

your close to me, and my fd's worth the money, pretty much all realiability mods done:
-downpipe
-silicone vac hoses
-boost, water temp, and a/f gauge(pillar custom molded into a-pillar)
-....all i need is a better ast, but thats still not nessasary yet

only downfall and reason i'm selling it is because it was recently in an accident. the e-brake failed and it drifted backwards into a tree at a friends house...(i cried).
so now i decided to sell it because i cant stand the heartache of something else happening to it, and i plan on moveing out of my parents house(plz no comments, its sad i know). when i am done fixing it, it will be good as new. when its done i would be happy if you or anyone else would want to come to check it out. i searched for almost 2 years to find this one, so she is perfect. dont pass up a good fd, come see it in person and i'll prove it to you. again if you are interested give me some time to fix it
