buying a rx7, odometer reading question

hi,

i found a 93 rx7 w/ 47,100 miles on it. the guy is asking for 18-19k. the car looks great, drove well, but i'm not an expert and that was my first time in a 7. anyways, two things are getting me worried, and since many of you guys have bought your 7s used maybe u can help me out.

1. i did a carfax report on it, and on 03/24/2000 carfax said it was 46,986 miles. that means in two years it's been driven only 100 miles!!! the guy did say he kept it in the gargage for 8 months..but still...anyways, how hard is to roll back the odometer? or is carfax just bs?

2. he can't find his registeration papers and the plates don't have the current 2002 stickers.

anyways, does this sound like he's trying to pull a fast one on me?

$18-19k is quite expensive. You can probably find a better one for that price. Keep looking.

Or you can try to talk him down to $16k if the odometer is accurate.

thanks for your input. i thought a low mileage 7 would go for about 18k, seems like i was overestimating.

That car was undrivable and off the road for some reason. That's why it only covered 100 miles in two years and the registration expired. There could be either a mechanical or legal problem. Maybe he blew his engine or had some other major mechanical disaster and it took him this long to get around to getting it repaired.

Another possibility is that the car is stolen, or won in a poker game, or left behind by a dead relative, or something along those lines. Is the seller's name listed in the carfax report? Has he owned it longer than two years? The fact that he can't find the registration and the plate stickers are outdated is a tip off.

You'll want to see a clear and clean title before you lay down any money for the car.

I don't take anything carfax says too seriously.

It aint that difficult to "roll-back" the odo.
