Other than the fact that this is a total scam as Parid said, this is a terrible first car.

Just so you know FDs here in california are usually more expensive. Be careful.

this kid sounds like an idiot. can't even figure out that this is an obvious scam.

isn't it funny how every time some 16 year old hops on here saying they're getting an FD they always claim "I'M GETTING THIS WITH NO MONEY FROM MY PARENTS!! i made all this money working for only 3 years at the grocery store as a bag boy!!!"

lol

fly out there and drive it back. Seriously. It's cheaper than getting screwed over on a scam or a bad FD. Do you know how much a screwed up FD is going to cost you?

+1 to arghx's comment

i one time tried to buy an FD from a guy who claimed to be a marine based in georgia. long story short he wanted me to send him the 12k first, then he sends me the car. yeah...right. after a bunch of other fishy excuses for me to not see him in person i called it off.

i went to houston instead and got my FD's keys/title handed to me by the previous owner himself. thats the best and safest way to do it. last thing you need is sendin off several K of your hard earned money only for all that work to go for nothing.

I like how it failed and then passed emissions on the same day (12/4/98) only with only two miles put on the clock. Impressively quick fix.

A gallon of denatured alcohol in the tank maybe?

Back to the topic...

I think you're looking at a scam. Be careful, very careful. I would not buy it any way but to pay and pick up in person. Ebay does not care about you getting a fair deal, and neither would most escrow services. The only party looking out for your interests is you, or since you're not yet 18 the poor (foolish?) parent who is letting their name be attached to this transaction.

Good luck, don't wrap it around a tree or innocent pedestrian like most 17yos do.

Dave

if i were ever serious about buying a car in another state, and i mean dead serious, i would fly there to inspect and test drive it. i was 17 when i got mine. and trust me the money you say you have will be gone once you get the car...

Watch out though there are many frauds out there. Friend of mine was searching for a second and third gen and everyone he email sent the same thing just worded differently.

sounds like a scam. If you really have the money and want one then fly out there and check it out. Dont buy it from what he says. spend the extra money, because if you dont you will just end up spending it in the end getting it insured/fixed anyways.

Normally I'd come in here yielding a lit flamethrower, but Rich's post has shut me up.

PLEASE think before buying a 3rd gen as your first car. Or, ignore everyone here and come back when you need help rebuilding it.

First car is nice but better off checking it out in person and making sure its what you want by driving it. If not repairs, headaches, and problems will cost money and time.

I just got mine 2 weeks ago, and I went through 4-5 cars over a month-long period until I found one that was in good enough condition for me to buy it. And boy, it was in immaculate condition... anyways...

Why do you want an RX7? You said yourself that you love the 97-99 Eclipses. So why even consider an RX7? Do you LOVE them as much? You really need to read these forums, namely the FAQ sticky threads at the top of the third gen section, as well as do a search for "reliability".

Also, check the CarFax report dvd was kind enough to get for you. You'll notice a 2 year gap from 2006 till now. Ask the current owner about it. Perhaps it is why he is selling the car.

I agree with what everyone else has said though, walk away, this is a scam. There are more FD's out there, and even more Eclipses, which you have said yourself you LOVE. That ecplise will cost a lot less to mod, and to fix when you break something. It'll be a lot easier to find competent people to work on it too.

Happy searching.

lol, 17 and a TT rwd as your first car? All you need to do is have a heavy foot around a corner on a rainy day and you're dead. Every kid "thinks" theyre good drivers, but the only thing that makes you a good driver is experiance, which atm, you have close to none.

As far as scams go, the FD is a common car used in scams, mainly because theyre expensive, and theyre popular, so to find one cheap, everyone jumps on it straight away. there was a 2001 Type Rs here with 67,000kms going for $8000aud ($6500ish usd), and i contacted the guy and he said he was in uk, and he would order it to be shipped to me after i bidpayed him the money... der... well i visited the address that he said the car was at, and lo and behold... his house got turned into a park about 3 years ago.. These cars are used as the centrepiece of scams every day.

Red face

Not everyone who is young has a heavy foot
Im 18, and when its a nice clear straight-a-way, then yeah, Ill gun it.
That being said, Im also not a dumbass who thinks he's getting a good deal out of this. Its a scam. Only way to find out is to see it in person, thats the best way too.

Not a good first car.

Most likely a scam.

Not a good first car.

Not a good daily driver in Canada,

Not a good first car.

Oh... and did I mention that an FD is not a good first car?

Just affording the basic expenses associated with the FD will probably put you in the negatives at your age. Let alone if something goes wrong. Get an FD as a second car... and by that I mean: Owning 2 cars, If something breaks, you don't want to be stuck without a vehicle.

Plus, not a good car for inclement weather.

Lots of palm trees in northern California too.

Still a scam, of course.

Hahhaa im not a compete idiot everyone, and thanks for you help:P I outsmarted the guy. I asked to contact the shipping company that the car was held at, and he gave me all the info. When i asked for the cars referance number however (3 times) he still has not replied. So I was looking into a rolling chassis from pettit racing for 4500, but that is way to far away and would be 1700 to ship, not even counting border crossing. I thought about what you all said and dont know if I wil bother for a while with the rx7. I found a mint 1998 GSX in michigan (way closer). It has taken me forever to find theGSX that meets my standards and im going to try to scoop it up. The car has almost 69 000 miles, is standard, black on black/grey, almost bone stock. I think I am going to attempt to buy it, I have been emailing the seller about it.

I bought my car from california and had it shipped without seeing it, however I bought it to do a v8 swap and rebuild it from the ground up, paint, body kit etc. so all I cared about was no rust.

That said an FD is idiotic to buy as a first car let alone your only car.
