buy good used turbos or rebuilt stock ones?
i found some good used turbos for 150 bucks with about 90k miles on them, and i also found some rebuilt ones on ebay for about 450 bucks...
how long do the stock turbos usually last? i was thinking 90k is stretching it, but for 150 bucks i might just do it.

neither. I have seen as many fucked up rebuild attempts as I have worn out stockers. mileage is not always the determining factor. 75% of the twins on the market today will burn oil/smoke in one way or another. Many people, including myself, go single not because of the desire for more power than the twins can make (350rwhp) but because it is damn near impossible to get a reliable set for a reasonable amount of money when compared to what clean used singles sell for. Not to mention the simplification a single involves.

I've bought a used set for $300. It's doing fine. Next time it goes out, I'm planning to go for BNR stage 2 or 3...

My twins currently have 100k on them and they are performing flawlessly.
If I were you, I would probably jump on these. Not much manifold cracking and they appear to be low mileage.

Make sure you get a good look at the manifold. If it looks okay, turbos are PROBABLY okay.

Haven't had to deal with the issue on my car....yet. But a friend and forum member went through about three different sets of "rebuilt" before he got one that didn't smoke and/or leak. IIRC, at least two of them were done by a specialty shop that presumably knew what they were doing. It was a frustrating and costly process that took him a good part of the summer.
When the time comes I'll probably go new or BNR III.

it's always a gamble even with reputable turbo rebuilders, it generally depends on whether the turbo feels like cooperating or not, not nearly the same as rebuilding an engine.
thing that gets me is people who are running well over 100 PSI of oil pressure and blaming the turbo builders.

Even when running a -3an feed and -12an drain you would still stand by that statement? What about when you put in a 50 thousandths restrictor and STILL get smoke or leakage?
I once had 9 bad turbos rebuilt in a row by a "reputable" shop. Compressor nuts came off when running, the leaked oil from the chra/turbine housing seam, smoked out the tailpipe, and performed poorly. I was told that the blowoff valves and oil pressure on all those cars were the problem.

I see RX7Store sells 99 spec turbos (new) for $2700. And single kits for $2350. Not much of a difference. Are the 99 specs not a good alternative?

It all depends on how good the housings are. Even a fresh rebuilt set of turbos will quickly start smoking again if the housings are cracked badly enough (and all used housing show some degree of cracking) because the gaskets will get blown out.

I think I am in the VAST minority, but I rebuilt my turbos around 30k miles ago using turbo city rebuild kits and don't have any noticable smoking, oil burning etc. I think I'm living on borrowed time as these turbos now have around 160k total miles, but as long as they keep boosting 14psi, I'll keep on keepin on.

I doubt your in the vast minority there. Ive ran several rebuilt turbos, garret's IHI's and mitsubishi's on previous cars. Doing the rebuilds myself and never having any issues afterwards. Im not sure how different (if any) the twins on our cars are, but if i can find rebuild kits for them i fully expect to rebuild mine this winter and also dont forsee any problems.
