Okay, here's my situation.
I'm 23 years old, and only make $33,000(Canadian none the less!) per year.

My plan is to save up $15,000 then take out a loan for $10,000 and buy a 93 or 94.

I know these are not reliable cars, I've seen that with my FC, but I've heard the FDs are even worse in that respect.
Can I afford to own this car, even if it's just for a couple of years?

Are all 3rd gen owners rich old men, or what?

How much on average are owners paying to keep these running per year?

In the end, if I spend all of my money, and own an FD for 2 or 3 years, will it have been worth it?

Let me know... for now the plan is still in place.

Search, read the stickies. Why would you save up $15K and then get a loan for $10K? You could get a good FD for $15K.

I am not a rich old man, I'm a poor 23 yr old college student. And only you'll be able to say if it was worth it or not.

 

A couple of things:
1) to Jasooner, remember its Canadian money, meaning that 25K is roughly like 18K or something, I don't know
2) search, search some more, and search even more...
finally, I know it sounds really stupid, and i'm going to turn into the kind of person that I use to hate, but how would we know if you can afford it or not! its your money, your options, your decision. remember that w/ this car comes higher insurance, higher octance gas, less mpg, and tons of other things,i.e. what if the engine blows! anyway, if you really want it, get it, but decide for yourself if you want this/can afford it

The secret society of FD owners is, as you describe, a collection of geriatric deadbeats with more money than brains. The FD requires constant mechanical attention does not handle well in a Canadian winter (allergic to road salt and winter tires) and it consumes premium fuel at an alarming rate (to stay warm). But... we can afford it so we don't care.

On the flip side, its been reported that the FD is a phenomenal babe magnet. The guiness book of world records states that one really old FD owner (in excess of 140 years old) got laid 900 times in one day by nymphomaniacal slave girls wanting a 'ride' in his car. According to reliable sources he was not using viagra or any other 'performance' enhancing drug. He simply claimed that owning the FD had a tonic effect that kept him young in mind and body and the effect helped sustain him through particularly arduous feats of stamina and physical duress.

I don't own a Rex but I do own a turbo car. Honestly if you don't know how to work on your own car or cant afford to pay for labor then at the end it is not worth the hassle.

 

When you put it that way, it becomes an easier decision...

I know that I want this car, I guess I just want other people to help me confirm that.

With a good rebuild can I expect at least 100,000kms from the motor? What about the turbos if they're cared for?

I guess I should start a new post, but what mods can I do for reliability?

 

No need to start a new thread. The first and most important step to taking care of an FD, is knowledge. With that said, it's important to read as much about the car and it's weak points as possible. Sourcing information may prove difficult at times, but it is out there, and the links at the top of this section provide an excellent place to find critical information. The patience acquired from learning the car prior to buying one, will help you greatly when actually owning the car down the road.

edit: in one of the links, it states that you should buy a turbo timer. I personally do not feel you need this, so couple the information found in these links with a search of your own.

 

I sold my FD a few months ago, and now have a 02 Maxima, yeah it doesn't get the looks and attention the FD got but its nice to have money. Now I'm not that old (26) but I am wise enough to tell you to take money you have and invest it. If you invest the money you have now and get a decent car that won't cause you trouble you should be should be able to triple your money with the correct investments and get a new 7 or whatever japanese sport cars we will be seeing in the near future. Turbo Z, Mazdaspeed 8, Supra replacement etc.

 

Its not worth it. FD ownership is a form of mental illness. See you at the asylum.

 

Hey Im 15 and i can afford to own my FD.....I think its worth it, just make sure do you drive a lot, if you want to motor to last

 

If you must ask the question is i worth it....then No! If you want something worth it.. get a house. But don't feel sorry for the RX-7 i'm sure most cars are a depreciating commodity.

Well i say only this...

I was going to buy a Fd. Then i read to much. I gained some knowledge and scared myself in the process. I was eyeballing this FD for sometime. I hesitated too long and ya know what? The guy who bought it lives near me. I will be tormented everytime i see it.

Can you afford it? Just break down your finances. Car payment per month, interest rates, insurance, and repairs. Don't forget food and other expenses. From my research and i'm sure people will agree you should always be saving for an engine because you really never know when they'll go boom. They typically last at least 60k-80k though. On top of that, it seems the car need about $750-$2000 of repairs a year. That was the kicker for me. As much as i want one, it wasn't the brightest thing to do...even though the car i was looking at had a new engine and turbos!....ok, i am gonna cry! I overanalyze everything. DONT DO THAT!

You'll find people that insist on doing the reliability mods and others believing stock form is best. mods cost more money so budget those in if you plan to do so.

Remember the qoute, if you don't buy one, the next time you see one, you'll wish you had. It's so true, it's just that i'll be seeing "the one" maybe on a weekly basis. Now that stinks

I'm 17, and I work every day after school making good wages. I have a tough time afford anything over gas, insurance and upgrades that I have to save up many months at a time for!

i guess its all up to you.. although im doing the same thing you're doing, im saving up money so when spring hits, im going fd shopping.. now i know its going to be hard to keep up with maintenance and insurance but this is the car that i want, that i think about and that i will drive happily..thats why im going to get it..

i know there are some issues with these cars cause i had an 87 turbo II and i sold it cause the apexi seals blew.. but is the 3rd gen worse or just the same?? either way, by next summer, i will be starting my new job starting at 40k a year so hopefully it will work out..
