Bumper Bra for 99 Spec? OEM? Aftermarket?

Does anyone know if a bumper bra exists for the 99 spec bumper? I'm thinking of going on a road trip in a few months, and I really want to avoid rock chips if I can since my car's paint will now be perfect.

I would imagine with the Rx-7 continuing in other countries for several years with the "99 spec" bumper that someone would have produced a bra. I hate the look, but I certainly hate it less than rock chips.

I searched, and this question has been asked a few times, but it was never given an answer.

Thanks.

I checked on this couple of years ago and apprently the whole "bra" thing is just USA only.
I think Japanese don't wear it..... on their car..

Seriously, I did check on this thru people in Japan and they all told me the same thing.. No such a thing thru the Mazda Japan.

I was thinking about getting one made.. Any interested party?? I could start checking for someone to make one..

I was afraid that this might be the case. It's funny that you responded to this, Phil, because the roadtrip I was speaking of is the Deal's Gap event in April. If the cost weren't too high and the quality was good, I would definitely be interested in a bra. I've also thought about getting that 3M stuff applied to the front, but I'm also unsure of how much that costs.

I'm not a fan of car bras - they typically do more harm than good. They do rub against the paint and can leave marks bigtime.

I'd look into getting that clear 3M chip guard film applied. I know some of the RX-8 guys were doing it - a local shop custom cuts the pieces and applies it, so it doesn't matter what "shape" the car is. Supposed to work very well, and is removable, not to mention it's damn near invisible.

Iused that 3M type stuff on my BMW with excellent results. I think it was called armor guard or something like that.

I guess I'll finally get to meet you! glad you are coming up.. I think it should be pretty cool event.. as of now, 35+ cars will be there.. and thats just the ones I know for fact coming.. I think if weathers good, maybe 50 to 75 might show.

I had my 99 bumper for I guess 1.5 years and so far its holding up pretty well. I do have some chips on my 99 signals though.

I've heard great stuff about those 3M stuff. Only thing I don't like about it is that its pricey and i don't want to leave it on as you could tell you have something on it.

One other suggestion I have for temporary thing would be to apply couple of layers of suran wrap and tape. It would at least keep it clean and give minium protection..

I just know secondhand info about it. Might want to hit up rx8club.com - there were quite a few people getting the 3M clear guard for their cars. Lots of info.

99 spec with license plate is the same basic shape as the 93-95 minus the plate right?
Would it be possible to get an existing 93 bra and have it modified by a competent person to fit the new plate protrusion? I don’t think it would be very expensive to have it done right and the stitching would sit in the squared off seams so it would probably look factory.

I agree that a bra will scratch the paint if left on there and dust is allowed to accumulate, but for a single trip to avoid rock chips I think would be a good compromise. Especially if you check the bra at your destination for dust accumulation under the bra, and clean it if necessary.

Phil, don't you have a grandma?

I would look into the clear film. My buddy with a shop just became a installer/distributor for a company that has it. They tend to deal with high-end exotics primarily but I imagine with a little interest, they might be willing to produce a kit for the FD. I was gonna make a post a few months back, but didn't get around to it. When I say a "kit", I mean they have pre-cut templates of this stuff that fits the car exactly. It covers the front bumper, lights, side mirrors, rear bumpers.... anything.

The company says that it removes with no ill-effects, and you can even wax over it so the paint doesn't fade underneath.

I will go to his shop tomorrow and get a booklet since I forget what the company is even called. I am sure there would be a fair amount of interest within the FD community.
