build my 87 or go 3d gen twin turbo

at the moment i have a 87 stock rx7 with 165k on the motor body. The bodys in good shape and interior isnt bad ethier. I was looking at doing a turbo ll motorswap. My buddy started in on that i should just save the cash and get a twin turbo 3d gen.

I love the loom of the 3d gen, but the horror stories some people have are a slight deterent. I am open to all recamendations. Looking for some pros and cons, some personal experiences, and such things like that

Thanks,
Ron

I love my 3rd gen but if I was in your position, I would go for the T2 swap.

maintence isnt a problem, i have full use of my girlfriends brothers garage(hes a mechanic). Ive done alot of work on my rx7 over the last year. Did a partial rebuild(new seals and i polished the rotors)mostly just to see inside of the motor .

My biggest concern is will the preformance be much greater than my fc. The fc is a heavy car, while the fd are a good bit lighter. I am still planning on keeping my 87 as a daily driver, and have the fd as a weekend car

According to this website a stock TII weighs 2845lbs.

http://www.rx7.org/public/rx7specs.html

a stock third gen is 2826lbs... not much of a difference really if you are comparing weight.

Swear, I'm not trying to hijack. I weighed my fd at a local weigh station and it only weighed 2760 with me not in drivers seat. Oh and no spare tire was in the trunk.

I think it depends on how much you like the looks and handling of each.

I've had a modded TII (sold it), and I also have my single turbo FD now. For about 2 years, I had both cars and drove both all the time....

I think the FD looks way better and since it was 6 years newer, the paint and interior were a lot nicer too. Which look do you prefer? Do you mind keeping up with aging plastic, etc?

The FD handled a lot better than the TII, but the TII was still a decent handler... just not "FD class".

Performance-wise, there is really no difference when you get down to it.... with equal levels of mods (like a single turbo for instance), the cars are pretty close in performance and handling.

Since you seem to be talking about a TII motor swap (implying that it will remain fairly close to stock with just some bolt ons) vs a twin turbo with maybe a few reliability mods... I'd say the FD is going to be a bit faster, look better, and handle better... I'd say go with a -quality- used FD.

wargasm: you pretty much hit on what i was thinking, I do love the style of the fd and the newer technology is also a nice thing.

The swap i was planning was just gonna be a full TII drivetrain and maybe a cone filter and a fmic. But it still would be a almost 18 year old car. Im planning now on just maintaining it and using it as a good daily driver.

I also like the fact that there is a much larger aftermarket for fd's then there is for fc's wich is another good mark in my book.

Thank you for all the good info i apreciate it greatly

The FD is head and shoulders above the FC: suspension, engine, 100A alternator, interior, curb weight, much better selection of parts and it even looks better.

FDs are quite a bit nicer in my opinion, but parts are more expensive, harder to come by, and you will need more of them. If you have the time/money to do it, get the fd, but if you arent sure, then I would recommend doing the TII swap until you are sure that you are prepared for the third gen.

The FD has a better suspension design, double control arms front and rear vs struts and trailing arms for the FC. The FD is 5" wider than a FC. Mod for mod there is no way a FC will ever handle like a FD. The FD has ABS standard which is a bonus for the street and auto-x.

Straight line performance isn't much different with mods because they can be modded the same amount. The FC is faster for the $$.

Looks, there is no comparison... FD hands down. Lower hood, wider body, room for serious tires, etc.

Im gonna start looking for one probally around september, That way i can get a good down payment on one.

One last question how do tese cars handle in the snow compared to the fc. I throw a couple bags of sand in my fc and that thing handles like a bear

eh, FDs and bad weather are taboo.

There were quite a few threads back in winter about people wrecking these cars in such conditions.

if i had to do it all over again...

i would be owning a very sweet STI right now.

putting in a new engine, turbos etc. sound fun... til the reality having to pay for it in one huge lump sum kicks in.
