broken wheel stud
I broke a wheel stud pulling a rear wheel off last week. It broke while loosening the lug nut; fractured right at the base of the nut leaving about a 1/4" sticking out of the spindle. I assume it has been cracked from overtightening in the past.
Anyone have this happen? I haven't looked close yet but surely Mazda won't make me pull the spindle to replace it? The service manual says pulling the spindle from the upright isn't fun.

I've had this happen to me before. Just go to the mazda dealer to get a replacement stud and let a local auto mechanic shop replaced it. It cost me $20 to for labor, I forgot how much the stud cost.

I had the same thing happen to me about six years ago on the rear. To do it right you'll need to pull the whole rear hub support assembly. See the manual, section M-10, don't worry it's not that bad, took about a half hour or hour. Take the whole thing to a machine shop, they'll press out the bearings (do not do this yourself), pop out the broke stud and push in the new stud, then press it back together. It is possible to ruin the bearings this way but I took the chance and it was (and still is) fine. When putting the assembly back on it's not hard to line up the splines on the axle.
Look at it this way, good time to do the yearly brake fluid change while you're down there.
