Broke Shifter In Half??

So I was on the way home. I just took out my profec 1 and haven't installed the spec 2 yet so no boost control plus it was raining and I have drag radials...no reason to be driving hard.

As I pull up to a stop sign I naturally throw the car in neutral. I stop, go to put it in first and SNAP. What just happened? Well, my ______ short throw shifter broke right at the shank. I couldn't believe it, it has low miles and everything....maybe I shift too hard and fast haha. So I drove home in 1st gear at 20mph it was phenomenal.

Are there any other assclowns in this category and would you expect to get a full replacement from the company? How should I go about it? yelling?? This thing was professionally installed. Quite ironic actually...

I guess we know now why it was making noise.

Sounds like it was faulty before you got it. If you got it from Pettit, I don't think they would have a problem replacing it (I think Jason would probably be the same as well).

At this point, it won't hurt to call and see.

shhhhhhh lol you remember everything

Any way I bought it used with ~5k miles from a guy I've bought many parts from and all were as he said. BUT I thought I had installed it wrong and that's why it was making noise so while I was at pettit for the steve kan tuning session a couple months ago I had Cam reinstall it and look it over and he said it was good to go...

mahjik you really can't hear the transmission at all with yours!??

While it's been a while since my car was running, I had no extra noise at all from the shifter itself (using the stock shift ****). I did have some noise when I first installed my Razo shift **** as it was resting on the widened part of the shifter and vibrating. I used some tape around where it met the shifter and all was well.

Update:
I called Pettit and asked Cam if he could just replace that part

I sent my shifter back to him and he replaced the entire thing!

I'd like to thank Pettit they really do have excellent service and performance ; )

This is pretty ironic! The SAME EXACT THING happened to me about a year and a half ago. I was at a light, went to put it in first...and WHAM! It snapped right in my hand. I was only about a half mile from my house, limped home in 1st just like you! Mine was purchased from Pettit as well and he sent me a new one free of charge. Mine broke just underneath the threads, between the two pieces. Either I didn't have enough bearing grease in it, or the threads may have been a hair loose. My new shifter does feel tight and I definitley hear the tranny noise too. Is that normal for the short shift kits? Anyone have another SS that doesn't hear the tranny???

lol pisser........

On a side note........ I cut the stock shifter top off and welded bolt on (I put a FC shift **** on). It lowered it a bit and works really good with the stock FC shift ****. I love the stock FC **** as It will never wear out. My TII has 1/4 million miles on it and it looks new.

It has fun rubber **** inside of it that burns pretty well

Most of the noise is reduced in the stock one from that black rubber stuff. Doesn't the mazda speed one keep the original shifter? I love the mazda speed short shifter in my TII.

I dont understand how a shifter can break. I was in an accident in my fd and the shifter was pushed into the tranny tunnel. I was going to sell the mazdaspeed short shifter, but i found out it was bent from the impact. You could see the slight bend in the shifter. It was a pretty bad accident. Maybe they had a few defective ones.

Damn that's is some total ninja type quick shifting.

I was at a track event last year and someone ripped the shifter off their car. The poor guy was so freaked out that he wrecked and totalled the car.

I couldn't find the top piece, but I kept that thing for atleast a year. I was pretty proud of myself splitting a 1/2 inch piece of steel with my bare hands!!! I'll look for it again tomorrow.
What kind of lube do you guys use when you put your SS in? I just coated it in bearing grease, but I can hear grinding sometimes. I pulled the new one out a few months ago and it was still lubed really well. I replaced the boot over the entire shift assembly and I have 2 insulator pads in there for heat absorption.
