As long as it's not synthetic, 10w-30 is fine for break in. If you run synthetic during break in, it will take much longer for the break in to complete.

I used Castrol 20w-50, WIX 51356 oil filter with AMS magnetic to trap metal shavings. Changed oil/filter at 250-500-1000-1500-2000 mile interval. Don't boost during this time period!

Later swithed to synthetic.

The thicker oil helps sealing during the breakin process.

I would think changing it more often and with a good filter is way more important than which particular brand or viscosity (within reason) your using.

would you say the K&N oil filter would be a adequate filter, for a first filter after a rebuild?

My engine builder advised me to use the cheapest oil I could find. Change oil & filter at 500 miles (still cheap oil). Then change oil & filter at 1000 miles to whatever oil you decide to run regularly.

I think the article makes a strong case on why not to use 20W-X or even 10W-x.

i thought running temps were taken into account; i figured rotaries run hotter than his street driven piston car examples but cooler than his track car scenarios.

also didn't he make a point about running too thin of a oil caused his oil pressure to fall under the manufacturer's recommended psi range? figured he was trying to show how running a thin oil is good up to a point but needed to be close to recommended psi for the rpm. think his example was around 10psi per 1,000rpm.

and 10-30 syn / 5-30 dino have decent "cold" viscosities don't they?

Kevin at Rotary Resurrection told me to use 10-40w for the break in period. It worked great.

Not sure if this would suit your needs, but this magnetic filter looks similar:

http://rx7.com/store/rx7/fdengine_maintenance.html - scroll to bottom for the FilterMAG .. I'm thinking of trying it too, especially during break-in/run-in.

don't know about break it, but I've never used anything other than Mazda filters and Valvoline 20w-50 oil. Got 160k on the original turbos, and 90k on a reman, so I must be doing something right. Either that or I just got lucky.
