Brand new member with Q's!

Hello! I just recently became a member after finding out that these forums actually exist! How cool, and so great for me to step into this century!!! Okay, I have had my '94 R2 for about 7 months now and the only things I have done to it are the Greddy Power Extreme exhaust (good choice?) and rims (I don't think I made the best choice here). I finally found a RX7 specialist to help, but their shop is over an hour away! I have to admit that I know very little about my car and am almost afraid to touch it under the hood! My major question is, is this car worth keeping??? I ask because I just turned over 100,000 miles. I don't know how much money it will cost to invest in a new engine sometime, and uprades that I would like to do as well. I originally fell in love with the car solely on it's looks! I didn't car how fast it went. Now I'm ready for FAST! I have a bit of a boost problem, but the specialist doesn't think it's too big of a problem by description. Anyone with a single turbo set-up out there? Any benifits/drawbacks? This is my first post ever, and I am looking forward to learning from all you MASTERS out there! Thanks!

The car is worth keeping if you ponied up the money for it already.

I'm not a master by any means, but you should begin by using the search feature at the bottom of the main page. It will take a while to sort through a lot of the stuff, but you'll be able to find answers to your questions there.

Congrats on getting your FD.

This forum is a fantastic resource for newbies. I'm still new and learn something new every day just by reading other posts. It is good to know what problems others are having so you can learn and be prepared incase it happens to you.

1) Boost problems are common. Typically isn't anything serious. I can live with my 7 because I like being under the car. When I'm tired of being there I'll pay someone I trust Don't jump in too far. It is always good to know the car so do somethign easy like change the oil or air filter.
2) Post in your local section. There maybe a great rotary mechanic right down the street you don't know about.
3) Don't get all excited about a single turbo quite yet. That is a lot of work and money. That may be what you want, but if you want reliabilty and more speed I'd say look at open the intake, downpipe, intercooler, intake pipes and a remapped ECU. (cause it sounds like you won't enjoy one you control) www.m2performance.com is a good source for 'kits' that include a remapped ECU.
4) Rebuilds, it all depends. You can get a reman motor for about 2K. you can have someone like pineapple racing rebuilt it and the tranny for a bit over 3K. There are many options here but I'd say look at the cheapest being 2K (w/out installation) and up to about 6K with labor and installation if you aren't doing it yourself.

Hope this helps, I'm still new like I said but this is what I have learned so far ... Mahjik will be here momentarily to post the newbie link.

Welcome

I'm just up the road from you in SLO. Next time you are up this way, let me know. I would like to see your car. Also, you need to set up your PM (private message) system so you can send/receive messages.

Thanks! Wow, someone in SLO? Cool...how do I set up the PM? Also, just curious (I may be "jumping the gun" and need to look at this site more!) about the single turbo setup and why would that not be the way to go? I have heard that there are less problems than with the twin setup...

Dave single turbos are pretty pricey and you may want to get more familiar with what you got before you swap your turbos. There are options to simplify the stock twin set up. There is a turbo simplification you can do to eliminate some BS stuff that you dont really need.
You can also do what alot of us have done and run your turbos non sequential as oppsed to the sequential ste up that they come stock.
You eliminate about 90% of the hoses that are there now by doing that.
japndes just posted about the best two links your gonna find online for your car.
One more that you will want to go to is www.iluvmyrx7.com
You can down load a work shop manual for your car there.
Good luck and enjoy.
