BOV leaking A LOT at idle

i never noticed it before... but my blitz bov (older one) was leaking a lot at idle... i mean i could feel a lot of air (A LOT) coming from the bov(I.E. blowing out of the bov) and hitting my hand at idle. i didn't think this was good, so i tightened down the adjust screw till where no air is leaking, but now under boost it sounds like i have it too tight... doesn't have a nice clean blow off... sounds like i am getting compressor surge. so whats the deal... should i loosen it so it blows off cleanly but leaks at blows air at idle, or should i leave it as it is now, no blowing at idle, but getting compessor surge.

john

ps, i'll have to check again, but i am pretty sure that the bov shuts close as soon as i start building boost... so i am not sucking in any, just losing some at idle....

I'd loosen it back up and quick! If you keep it tight and keep getting compressor surge you're gonna be replacing turbos!! If it's shutting as soon as you start building boost then I don't see any big disadvantage. You're not losing any performance since the problem only exists at idle. But the best thing to do is just buy a new BOV. Until then though, please please please loosen that spring back up before you burn up your turbo. Best of luck to you. Laterz.

the whole principle of a BOV is that it is open when off boost to prevent compressor surge. So, yes, at idle there is no boost and yes, the BOV is open. My tial is open at idle as well. DON'T get a new BOV, it is functioning correctly.

As others have said the BOV is open anytime there is vacuum. Yours is working as it should.

Wow, I can't believe that I missed that one. At least my brain was working enough today to tell him to loosen it back up! Anyone wanna send me a turbo 7 quick?? I haven't seen either of mine in like 2 months!!!!! Living on an island sucks sometimes.

The trick is to have it set so that it is closed under 16-18 in vacuum and open when the engine pulls high vacuum when the throttle is shut at high rpm. It should open at 20 - 24 in vacuum .The stock ones open at 4 in vacuum, if you take them apart and stack washers in the top to preload the spring, they open at 8 in vacuum . So the search is on for the correct spring .Keeping it closed at idle will help the low end responce alittle for the cost of a small spring .

On page F-88 of the FSM in the test procedure it says:
"3. Apply approx 26.7 kPa {200 mmHg, 7.87 inHg} to Port A and verify that air flows between B and C."

Anyways, I didn't even know you could adjust those things.

you have to have a careful set of hands and an ingenious head on your shoulders. youre not supposed to be able to adjust them, but if you use your noggin youll be able to.

paul

anyways. . . jonski, why havent you swapped over to a manual tranny yet?

Do the tops unscrew or somthing?

I can't do a 5-speed swap if I can't locate a 5-speed FD that's being parted out.

Jonski,
the stock BOV is not adjustable. They are talking about aftermarket ones.

isuposs, i am talking about stock ones. you have to pull out the surgery kit for this one.

jonski, no they dont. its very careful and well planned. . . and youve had that car forever!!!! NO EXCUSES. HAHAHA. ive seen plenty of them parted out. one word. . . junkyard.

im only playin witcha, but i will say this. the rx7 isnt really noticed till you drive it in 5 speed configuration. its amazing what this thing does with a manual.

Rotorbrain is correct Garfinkle opens the stock valves and the stock wastegate and prespool actuators to change the springs .
