Both excited and tormented.

My FD arrived on Wednesday. I couldnt believe how dirty it was being hauled accross country on the back of a truck... It was unbelievably dirty... but she cleaned up real purdy. Busted out some of that mcguire gold liquid wax... Very nice... Problem is A) i think it's jacked up and B) I cant drive it anyway to see how jacked it is, if at all..

It's pretty funny, USPS is having a hard time shipping out my pink slip... It's taking them longer than it did to truck my car over from TN... So i figure that I A) have no lic plate, B) have no proof of insurence, C) no proof of ownership, D) no proof of registration... If i get pulled over I figure I'd get cuffed... cant risk it. Frustrating, to say the least.

Anyway time for the questions. A) exhaust billows white smoke for maybe 3 minutes upon starting it.. Is that typical? bad sign? Anybody have any trouble passing CA smog regulations?... there is also a repugnant stench coming from the engine after the one time I drove it (on the way home from picking it up from where the trucker dropped it off)... smelled like bruning rubber... I suppose that could be nothing. B) Does anybody recommend a boost gauge that fits the cockpit well (black face, lights up red) C) Is there any trick to the stereo? fuse seems to be intact, dealer claims it worked while he had it... Antenna was up in the pictures I saw. Oh and it doesnt flash anything.. no ERR or CODE indicating the security system has kicked in. D) the interior is CLEAN.. YAY cloth... wears like iron, EXCEPT the panel the shifter sits in is wearing away.. clear coat peeling , does mazda sell replacements for a reasonable price or are there any good after market ones?

In order:

A) - 3 minutes is a little on the high side, but it's probably becuase it hadn't been started for a while. If it consistently smokes for that long (and it's not real cold out) then you might have a problem. As for the smell that is not normal (gas richness smell is normal), maybe you have something stuck on part of the exhaust, plastic bag or something? Check that out because it could be something burning (wiring harness...).

B) - Autometer Sport Comp gauges match very well, they make an A-Pillar pod for the FD too.

C) - No lights means no power, unless the unit is totally fried. Check all the fuses again (even the ones under the hood, there are some under the intake duct too) and then pull out the radio and check the harness, check for power with a multimeter.

D) - No Mazda sells replacements at a ridiculous price. Do a search for painted interior in the 3rd Gen Section, several people have painted their interiors and the results are amazing. There are also CF, or Aluminum stick on kits that sell for anywhere from $100-$400.
