Bose HU display bulb replacement
The backlighting has been out on the display of my oe Bose HU. I know some others still running the Bose have had this but I searched and didn’t see very much on fixing it.
It looks like all of the bulbs in the unit are the same. I used radio shack bulb# 272-1092. They had this in stock. This is the same bulb I have seen written up in other posts that have been used for the instrument panel. However, there are no sockets for the bulbs in the HU. They have to be soldered.

Dissassembly
The face of the HU is held on by a tab on each side and one on the bottom. Comes away from the chassis easily.
There is a ribbon cable to supply the electronics for the face. It is just like when removing a keyboard from a notebook computer. Get something behind the sides of the socket and pull forward to loose the ribbon. Now the face is free.
Looking at the bottom of the backside of the face, there is a long plastic piece with 5 small screws. Remove the screws and this plastic piece. There may be a spot or two of glue where the board is glued to the black plastic of the face housing. I cut these off. Then the board can be lifted out.

Soldering
The leads from the old bulbs will have to be desoldered. Then you can grab the leads with some pliers and pull them out from the back. The bulbs come out with a pop when you pull them out from the bulb covers. If you are like me and haven’t done much circuit board work it may seem unusual placing the component (bulbs) from the back of the board instead of the front. There is also a soft circular white backing disk that goes behind each bulb. These and the bulb covers are fragile. I took out the amber covers for my desoldering but it is best to leave them in as they are delicate. I partially tore one of mine putting it back in as well as one of the white soft backing disks.
As for the soldering itself, I haven’t done much but I read the soldering tips and watched the videos on Aaron Cake’s web site and these helped me quite a bit. Also, it I think my soldering came out better by getting some solder with lead instead of the non-leaded types that are sold some places.
