Angry BOSE birthday disaster

So, this past Saturday, happened to be my birthday, big 25, cheap insurance and all that cool stuff. I decide i want to take the fd to get me a monster as a little gift to myself, start the car to let it warm up for a second as i move my truck from behind the garage.

get back into a car full of smoke....first reaction, shut down the engine, look for fire, thankfully i had my gauges out from above my radio and i see a little flame, tried blowing it out, no luck, ran inside to grab the only thing i have to put a fire out..... Monoamoniumphosphate fire extinguisher. one tiny puff was all it took to get the fire out.

I then proceed to see wtf, disconnected the battery and began searching, low and behold the BOSE amp that sits in the left side of the passenger foot-well just burst into flames for no apparent reason. the radio has not been messed with, no wiring changed in months and months.

So, the rest of that day, and all of today was spent ripping every component of the interior out, to include the dash, all A/C components and blower assembly, rear storage bins.....everything, aside from the carpet, the glue in the center is a real PITA, all for a ridiculously thorough cleaning to best prevent any damage occurring from the chemicals in the extinguisher.

The only damage aside from that stupid amp was the A/C vent that goes from the center to the passenger vent, melted and now has a giant hole in it. So, that i am thankful for. Now my real question, does anyone have experience with using monoamonium fire extinguisher in their car, and the damage the chemical does, how long will it take to start bad things, any info from first hand experience would be awesome.

Thanks in advance, and screw you bose for setting my car on fire!

Must've been the ghost of Dr. Bose haunting your car. LOL (He actually died a few days ago.)

Was your system behaving oddly prior to this? My system makes an audible pop when I turn it on, and the left channel doesn't work until I've driven around for a bit.

Can't help you with fire extinguisher info, I'm afraid.

nahh, the audio sounded fine, it was hooked up to an aftermarket deck through a line out converter. but i dont think that constitutes it turning into a fireball in my dash.

pretty crazy coincidence that he dies and so does my amp.

And car... Seriously tho any damage to the dash? Fire extinguisher is pretty nasty. I would just tear the dash out and wipe everything down. Look at the wiring on the deck. Buddy of mine has a track car her tore the interior out of if you need anything maybe he has it? Best I can do. Post pictures and whatever you do don't start it up. Possibly incorrect fuse?

I've had a car burn to the ground (well, the front half of it anyways) and I'm rebuilding it currently. The fire extinguisher mess is not really harmful to plastics or any materials as far as I've found. More worrying is that when certain plastics melt/burn, they give off toxic smoke and char, which then settles into the carpets and upholstery, and you ingest the stuff, and it can be carcinogenic. So a full clean as best you can, is your best plan. Sorry to hear about it. I know how it feels to have a car go up in smoke for no apparent reason

So did your car have the whole Bose installation? Wave unit in the boot, Bose head unit, etc? Is this Bose amp also fitted to non-Bose cars? (if it is, I'll find it and remove it from mine...)

I already tore the whole dash out, seats, rear bins, all of the air conditioning components, a/c, heater core, and blower out inspected all of the wiring and stuff, everything is good with the exception of the Bose amp, its clearly the source of the fire, right above the amp is the plastic tube that the air flows through to get to the passenger vent, big hole melted in it, everything else is fine. No wiring was burned, hell even the plug that goes into the amp was fine. Everything is back together and running normal again, I just hope there are no long term effects of the type of extinguisher I used.
